Herbert Lyle Sutherland died Monday, December 28, 2015 at a rehab center in Colorado Springs. He was undergoing rehabilitation after experiencing a heart attack.
Herb was born April 12, 1925 in Ottawa, KS. He was one of four children born to Leslie Raymond Sutherland and Mary Lorena (Haverty) Sutherland. Herb came to a saving knowledge of Christ as a boy while attending church with his mother. He graduated from Ottawa High School in 1934 and attended Ottawa University, where he majored in math. Later he joined the Navy and was trained to repair the top secret Norden bombsight.
Herb’s father had always encouraged his boys to work for the railroad, carrying on a family tradition. In 1947 Herb went to Alaska and worked for 4 years as a brakeman for the Alaskan Railroad. There he met and fell in love with Charlotte Vivian Johnson of St. Paul, MN. The two were married March 13, 1949, and enjoyed 65 years together until Charlotte’s death last November. Herb has lived in Colorado since 1952 where he worked for 31 years for Sundstrand Corp. He and Charlotte reared 7 children together. They were long time members of Adams City Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon and Sunday school teacher. Most recently he has been a member of Light House Baptist Church in Colorado Springs. He had a strong and abiding faith, and a heart for evangelism. Always the example of a faithful, Christian husband, father and grandfather for his family.
Herb is preceded in death by his father, mother, brother, L. Bernard Sutherland, sister Myra Sutherland Howell. He is survived by his sister, Vera Sutherland Surface of Overland, KS, 7 children and their spouses, Gwen & Dan Gee of Engelwood, CO, Fred & Eleanor Sutherland of Brighton, CO, Brian & Brenda Sutherland of Turlock, CA, Ray & Robin Sutherland of Falcon, CO, Ned & Marilou Sutherland of Russiaville, IN, Ted & Marlene Sutherland of Golden, CO, Daniel & Cindy of Colorado Springs, 29 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.
