

Ilene passed away peacefully on August 19, 2015 with her loving family at her side. She was born in Logan, Kansas on 2-22-22 and died at age 93. As a girl she moved to Monument, Colorado where her mother later became the postmaster. She grew up in Colorado having close friendships with her many aunts and uncles.
Ilene retired from the Air Force Academy dental clinic. She sponsored three cadets while working at the AFA; Karen, Pat and Tammy and they became her lifelong friends. They continued to fly-in to see her until the very end. She also developed wonderful friendships with many of the doctors and staff while working at the dental clinic and looked forward to their many visits.
Ilene graduated from Lewis-Palmer High School and enjoyed their alumni dinners for many years. Before she became a dental assistant, she worked as an operator at the Telephone Company while running her restaurant “The Nut Shop” in downtown Colorado Springs with her husband Jim Ketchum. She later married Jerry Hawk. Ilene worked at Joslin’s after her retirement.
Ilene was an optimist who made friends wherever she went. She’ll be remembered for her insightful sayings, her cooking, beautiful flowerbeds, her honesty and spirit. Ilene was an avid reader, sometimes reading four books a week.
Ilene is survived by her devoted and caring brother Bill Simpson and his wife Cheryl, sister-in-law Lavone “Sis” Cummings along with many nephews, nieces, cousins and wonderful friends.
She was predeceased by her mother Goldie Simpson, stepfather Fred Simpson, brothers Bobby Simpson and Kenneth Post.
A service for Ilene will be held on Friday, August 28, 2015 at 10:00 AM at Mountain View Mortuary, 2350 Montebello Square Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80918.
