Lt. Col. Worth McCue, USAF, (Ret.).
Joan was born in Spencer, IA, on December 7, 1939, to Everett and Delia Hedge. She grew up on a farm in Minnesota where she attended a one-room school with grades 1-6 totaling 13 students. She graduated high school in 1957 and earned her BA in Education from Mankato State University in 1960. Always seeking adventure, Joan immediately accepted a teaching position in Colorado Springs. Once she smelled that fresh mountain air, she was hooked, and the Midwest farm life was left behind. By 1963 she had earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado.
Joan married Worth McCue on September 5, 1965, and they had just ten months together before Worth was deployed to Viet Nam. Worth was a pilot in the US Air Force, and Joan and their two sons went with him in his duty assignments to many places. Joan and Worth recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary.
A daring spirit, whether it was a train ride in Russia or a biology class in the jungles of Ecuador, Joan loved to travel and visited a wide range of foreign countries. She became a private pilot and enjoyed water and snow skiing. She was part of a hiking group, played tennis, played the piano and made several trips with her “Wildflower Friends” to explore the Rocky Mountains. Joan loved hosting dinner parties with friends.
Joan was an avid seamstress, sewing everything from underwear to sport coats! “Grammie” sewed dresses for her granddaughters and was often called upon to create costumes of all kinds. She recently enjoyed knitting socks for herself and people special to her.
Worth and Joan retired and moved to Colorado Springs in 1984, and after 22 years in the classroom, Joan retired from teaching early elementary children. Retirement did not slow her down! She could be found sewing quilts for Russian orphans, delivering Meals on Wheels, cooking for the homeless, and fundraising for charitable causes. Active in her church, Calvary United Methodist, she was a member of the Chancel Choir, Heart Friends, Russia Initiative, her life group, Prime Timers’ leadership, and numerous church committees. She also taught English as a Second Language (ESL) for five years for Catholic Charities.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband and their sons, Michael (Lori) McCue and Mark (Marcia) McCue, brothers Carl (Ann) Hedge and Keith (Jan) Hedge and grandchildren, Katherine, Alexandria, Arianna, and Carson.
Services will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church on October 6th 2016, at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church, 4210 Austin Bluffs Parkway, 80918.
