Joan McKenzie

Joan passed away peacefully in her home on January 28, 2022. She was born in Failsworth, England on June 11, 1935 to John Henry and Mary Alice Stanley. She was the second of four children.

Joan met Michael Roy Smith while he was stationed with the Air Force in England. They married in 1956 and had a daughter and two sons. Approximately a dozen moves and three countries later, they landed in Colorado in 1973. They started a business with Joan as the office manager. She worked in this capacity in a number of businesses in Colorado Springs after she and Mike divorced. She had a strong work ethic and worked into her 70's.

After Joan and Mike divorced, Joan met Dennis Peter McKenzie and they were married in 1984. They were married almost 36 years until his death in 2020.

Joan loved to garden and often received compliments from her neighbors on her beautiful yard and flower beds. She also loved to travel and had the opportunity to visit wonderful places in the United States as well as many beautiful locales around the world. She was also so proud to be English! She was a long time member of the TBPA - Transatlantic Brides and Parents Association and the Pikes Peak British Club.

It was also important to Joan to support charities that helped underprivileged children. Because the Salvation Army had often helped her family in times of need, she also donated to them every year.

Joan was preceded in death by both of her parents, all of her siblings and both Mike and Dennis. She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Crawley, her sons, Chris and Andrew Smith, and her grandchildren, Ryan Crawley, Rebecca Smith, Jeremy Smith, Melinda Warner and Matthew Warner.

Her service will be held on Sunday, February 20, 2022 from 12:00-1:30pm at the Mountain View Funeral Home at 2305 Montebello Square Drive in Colorado Springs. There will be a viewing from 11:00am until noon. She will be buried with Dennis at the Pikes Peak National Cemetery on Tuesday, February 22 at 10am. Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Smith, Andrew Smith, Ryan Crawley, Jeremy Smith and Matthew Warner.
