John Richard Bessette, 79, died October 19, 2026. Born January 22, 1947, in Proctor, Vermont, John was a man whose steady reliability, plainspoken forthrightness, and tireless work ethic were matched by a quiet, well-timed humor that stayed with those who knew him. He was a resident of Colorado Spgs, Colorado.
John graduated from Otter Valley Union High School in 1965, where he lettered in Track. He went on to graduate from UVM with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1969, beginning a lifelong commitment to learning and to the practical craft of building things well and correctly. He became a Professional Civil Engineer in the States of Vermont, Maine, Florida, and Colorado.
In 1969, John joined the National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1975. He earned recognition as a Sharpshooter and received the ARCAM Medal. His professional life was defined by a lifetime career in Civil Engineering, where his dependability and direct, constructive guidance made him a valued colleague. He mentored fellow co-workers at JR Engineering and Classic Consulting Engineers, offering the kind of steady support that strengthens both projects and people. John retired in 2008.
In June 1969, John married his college sweetheart, Susan. Together they built a family that remained at the center of his life: children Jason and Nathan, and grandson Ean. John was preceded in death by his mother and father, brothers Paul and Patrick, and sister Mary.
John’s hands were rarely still. A remarkable craftsman, he built his home in Vermont by himself and completely remodeled his Colorado home, including handmade kitchen cabinets. He was also quite the furniture maker, and his love of working with wood reflected the same care, patience, and pride he brought to every responsibility. In retirement and beyond, he also enjoyed hiking, fishing, hunting, and shooting.
John was a member of the Ben Lomond Club and the NRA. He was also known for quietly stepping forward when help was needed—always ready to lend a hand to his neighbors and to the Church of St. Michael the Archangel.
The family extends sincere gratitude to Abbie and Amanda, his hospice nurses, for their compassionate care and support.
