JOHN MARSHALL BUDD, JR. Born February 6, 1934 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to John Marshall Budd and Frances Bullard Budd. He died of heart failure in the company of family on November 15 in Colorado Springs.
The son of a railroad man, John and his brother William moved multiple times with the family finally settling in St. Paul in 1949. John graduated from St. Paul Academy and continued on to Yale University, earning a master’s degree in electrical engineering. Between undergraduate and graduate studies he met the lovely Barbara Tews and soon after her graduation from Smith College they wed. Following his studies they relocated to Minneapolis where John began what he called his “first career” as an engineer with Honeywell. His projects ranged from missile and torpedo guidance to traffic controls. In 1973, with his family of four children, he moved to Colorado Springs to help grow Honeywell’s Solid State place in the market. In addition to engineering work, John was active in the community including serving several years as president of the Pikes Peak United Way. After 35 years of distinguished service, he retired from Honeywell but not from community service.
Inspired by friends and leaders in cultural and social service, John began his “second career,” creating Budd Management Consulting with a mission to improve care for developmentally disabled adults. It became a passion for the remainder of his life. Other passions included camping, dogs, beach picnics, attending art shows with his wife and music from classical to bluegrass. Endlessly curious, he was fascinated by subjects ranging from high energy physics to cyber security to the Pony Express to the mathematics of music.
Loving father and devoted husband, John was enthusiastic, engaging, and a great source of encouragement to those around him. In 2014, John lost his wife of 57 years. Yet he never stopped working with disabled adults, appreciating the arts, delving into diverse studies, tinkering to improve things, and enjoying friends and family. He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth B. Ellmann (Stephen), his sons, John M. Budd III, Peter B. Budd (Jenna Zark), Benjamin B. Budd, his grandsons Noah Budd, Jack Budd and his step-grandson Joshua Kowitz.
“I had such a fun life.”
