Born and raised in Ann Arbor, he bled Maize and Blue all the way through medical school. A stint in the Army introduced him to the west and he chose Colorado Springs to set up his practice in orthodontics. After changing the lives of several generations of smiles, his retirement was spent pursuing several passions. He excelled artistically with multiple mediums, volunteered at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, traded putts and tall tales with the Good Old Boys at the Kissing Camels Golf Club, and constantly tinkered around his beloved property.
He leaves behind his wife and partner in fun for the last 40 years Glenn, daughters Farrell Carson and Dayna Carson (Mike) Wiederich, sons Ward (PJ) Mahanke and Morgan (Melissa) Mahanke, big sister Helen Schmalhorst, nephews Doug Schmalhorst, David Schmalhorst, and Brian (Maria) Schmalhorst, grandchildren Cailin Mahanke, Carson Mahanke, and Cameron Mahanke, great-niece Laura Schmalhorst (Matt) Roberts and great-nephew Matthew Schmalhorst, and an almost empty Bucket List.
To honor his memory, volunteer for your favorite charity, or donate to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo or KIND - Kids in Need of Dentistry.
