He was born on October 6th, 1930, in the Pickens County, Alabama town of Aliceville. He was the first of eight children of Jim and Icie Bell McCaa. His parents preceded him in death as did three of his siblings; Ann Clark, Emma Washington, and Ida Mae Mohead, all of Aliceville.
Two other sisters, Irene Taylor and Icie Woolridge still call Aliceville home. Brothers: Jim McCaa and the Rev. Will Earl McCaa reside in Chicago.
Johnnie served 30 years in the United States Air Force living in Goose Bay, Labrador, Illinois, Idaho, Nebraska, and Spain.
Early in his military career he met and married Margaret McCaa (Britt) of Champaign, Illinois. Their union produced two children: Debra Ann McCaa who married Maj. Kevin Long (Ret) and lived in Clifton, Virginia, and John McCaa who, with wife Nora, now lives in Edinburg, Texas. Both Margaret and Debra preceded Johnnie in Death.
Grandson Collin McCaa and his wife Ikenia live in Houston, Texas where they are raising Johnnie’s great granddaughter: Chosen Rose.
Johnnie McCaa considered his time in military service invaluable. He was awarded numerous medals and citations, earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Omaha, a Master’s degree from the University of Southern California and formed life-long friendships with people around the globe.
An avid jogger and later power walker, he maintained a strenuous exercise regimen from his 30s well into his 70s.
In 1980, after retiring in Nebraska as a Chief Master Sergeant in the Strategic Air Command (SAC), Johnnie and Margaret moved to Colorado Springs where he became Personnel Director for Harrison School District #2.
He served admirably in that position for 15 years before retiring in 1995.
Johnnie’s volunteer spirit was legendary, joining organizations and sitting on numerous boards engaged in working to improve relations in the city, mental health, neighborhood watch, Meals on Wheels and much more.
In every stage of his life, Johnnie McCaa put God first believing a strong and abiding faith combined with service to others was fundamental to a successful life. At nearly every duty assignment, he volunteered his time to teach Sunday School and in more than one case became the Sunday School Superintendent. Even in retirement he continued his strong commitment to the Peterson Chapel community.
Johnnie’s kindness, his unconditional love for and commitment to a life following Christ touched all who met him.
While as a family we mourn his passing, we share his complete confidence in where he is now and will forever reside: at peace in the arms of our Lord, reunited with his wife, daughter, and parents ... rejoicing at the end of a long life and hearing his Redeemer declare, “well done, thou good and faithful servant.”
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that financial donations be made to the Dementia Society of America at or to Silver Key Senior Services http://.www.silverkey.org/.donate/ which supports a healthy quality of life for seniors in the Pikes Peak Region, allowing them to age safely with dignity and independence.
