Julia Kathleen (Kay) Hanes, 87, long time resident of Colorado Springs, CO passed away August 28, 2018 at home, surrounded by family. Born April 12, 1931 in Detroit, MI, she moved to Colorado Springs at the age of 14. She met the love of her life, Richard Hanes, while attending Colorado Springs High School. Kay attended the University of Colorado and Purdue University. Married on December 26, 1951 she and Richard raised their family of four in Colorado Springs.
Kay was a pioneer with Montessori schools, Natural Childbirth and La Leche League, well before these ideas were mainstream. She founded Hanes Company and worked as a Realtor for over 30 years. She also owned and operated “As You Like It Tours“. Kay was a long time member of the Broadmoor Community Church and was a founder of El Paso County Law Wives. She actively participated in Refugees International, sponsoring two Cambodian families into full US citizenship. For many years, Kay lent active support to La Puente children’s home in Alamosa, CO. Most recently, she was active as a Trustee for the Butte Theatre in Cripple Creek, CO.
Kay was a passionate humanitarian and always found the good in everyone.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Julia Kay Hanes Memorial Fund. This fund will be distributed to Kay's favorite charities including the Butte Theater.

Kay will be greatly missed by her husband Richard, her children, Christie, Kirk (Sharon), Ken (Edina) and Kathleen (Dean), niece Sara and nephew Daniel. She leaves behind eight grandchildren and innumerable friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 15th, 2018 at 2:00PM at The Broadmoor Community Church, 315 Lake Ave, Colorado Springs, CO.
