With deep love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of J.W. Sanders, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 19, 2026, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, at the age of 88.
J.W. was born on September 21, 1937, in Tennessee, to Lawrence and Thelma Sanders of Mt. Vernon, Illinois. He lived a life rooted in faith, family, friendship, sports, and education. For nearly three decades, he served as a Professor of Physical Education at Eastern Illinois University (1970–1998), where he was widely respected for his coaching, mentorship, and dedication to his students. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, shaping the lives of countless young men and women.
Football was one of J.W.’s great passions. He officiated for many years in the Big Ten Conference and the NFL, and later served as a Technical Advisor for the Mountain West Conference. Through his summer officiating camps in Charleston, Illinois, he mentored and inspired aspiring officials, leaving a lasting mark on the sport he loved.
Some of J.W.’s happiest moments were spent on the golf course, on the field coaching, and most of all, gathered with friends and family. He had a gift for connection, storytelling, and steady encouragement.
He is lovingly survived by:
His daughter, Lynn Cash of Colorado Springs, and grandchildren, Skyler and Austin Cash
His daughter, Mary Sanders of Boulder, Colorado, and son-in-law, Eric Hamilton
His sister, Sandy Beardsley of Bardwell, Kentucky
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Thelma Sanders; his brother, Bobbie Sanders; his beloved wife of 52 years, Carol Sanders; and his daughter, Catherine Rowe.
J.W. leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, integrity, and service. His steady presence, generous spirit, and commitment to uplifting others will continue to live on in all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to Pikes Peak Hospice.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church (2650 Parish View, Colorado Springs, CO 80919) at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2026, followed by a Celebration of Life at 1101 North Corona, Colorado Springs, CO 80903.
His life was a blessing. His memory is a gift.
