Kate was a student in my education class at UCCS, Schools/Society/& Diversity, spring semester of 2010. She was a delight! She always engaged in our class discussions, was very focused, and was secure in who she was. I could tell she was going to make an excellent teacher! We all loved her perspective, opinions, and honesty. Our world has lost a true ray of light and I know her passing leaves a huge void for her family, friends, and 3rd grade students at Soaring Eagles. I loved the photo you used in the GAZETTE obituary, as her smile truly lit up a room. That is how I will remember her. Although her time here was too short, she had already made a difference. Genuinely, Kristie M. Ewig/College of Education/Instructor/UCCS

Wally, Rose, Emil, George, Peter and Kim : I am still in a fog about Kate's passing. I can't believe it. I was blessed and just plain lucky to have Rose, Kate and Kim in my Venturing Crew in Richardson Texas. We had so much fun it should have been illegal. I always got Kim and Kate mixed up and I think they thought it was pretty funny, no I know they thought it was funny. I remember when Crew 44 were "the night guards" at the church the night before they were having their huge garage sale and we had a fashion show. We found the most outrageous outfits, hats, and whatever else we could find and laughed till we cried. I am honored and blessed that you shared a small part of your lives with me. I will keep you all in my prayers and close to my heart and hope it will help heal. All my love and my prayers are with your family.

Kate-losing you will forever be a big loss to our family. Your smile brought out the best in everyone you surrounded yourself with and that will be the memories I hold dear. We are sincerely going to miss you. But we will remember you always. Light up heaven the way you did here on Earth. We're so blessed to have had the years we had with you. We love you.

P.S. I thought you might appreciate the memory that sticks out the most regarding Kate (and Kim). In all honesty, I was so excited when the Banzhaf's had twin girls. Even though I was only a kid at the time, I always thought it was kind of a special blessing for their family to finally have a couple of girls. (no offense to the boys) And because I am a twin, I was fascinated by another set of twins at church. When I would look over and see how much Kate and Kim were loved by their parents and their older brothers, I thought it was so sweet. I still remember the adorable little blonde-headed girls sitting on their brothers' laps during Mass and then playing around in the cafeteria afterwards. We (my sister and I) would try to figure out which twin was which.
Kim, I know that the twin bond is a strong one. I am really sorry about your sister! I will pray for an extra measure of grace and comfort for you and your Mom during this difficult time!

Kate was an incredible woman who inspired me in so many ways. Whenever I have to make a scary decision that pushes me out of my comfort zone, I think "What would Kate do?" I'll miss her smile, her courage, her honesty, and her beautiful spirit. Though she left us far too soon, I am blessed to have known her. I know that wherever she is now, she's facing this next adventure with courage and a mischievous sparkle in her eyes. Love you, Kate. I'll miss you and I know that part of you lives on in the many ways you changed me.

Diego Salazar was blessed to have Kate as his third grade teacher this year. The loss of Kate is a loss to also the children who she taught in the school system. Kate was very good with all children and especially with Diego. Kate was so willing to help us when we would call about Diego. She was so involved with her class that she also created a poem book about winter for the children to write in and sent them to the families of her students. I am deeply sorry to her family for thier loss. I pray that the Lord gives you comfort in your time of grief. I want you to know that you had a wonderful person in your family that embraced others and losing her was a loss to everyone she encountered. Our deepest Sympathy The Salazar Family.

Today we light 4 candles for dear Kate to show our sympathy for Rose, Wally , Kim and Family
The first candle represents our grief.
The pain of losing you is intense
It reminds us of the depth of our love for you.
The second candle represents our courange.
To confront our sorrow,
To comfort each other,To change our lives.
This third candle we light in your memory.
For the times we laughed,
For the times we cried,
The times we were angry with each other,
The funny, silly things you did,
The caring and joy you gave us.
This fourth candle we light for our love.
We light this candle that your light will always shine
As we enter this sad time and share this day of remembrance with family and friends.

I send to the Banzhaf family this poem.
Ascension
And if I go,
while you're still here...
Know that I live on,
vibrating to a different measure
-behind a thin veil you cannot see through.
You will not see me,
so you must have faith.
I wait for the time when we can soar together again,
-both aware of each other.
Until then, live your life to its fullest.
And when you need me,
Just whisper my name in your heart,
...I will be there.

I met Kate when she completed her student teaching with me at Broadmoor Elementary last year. Wow, what an incredibly talented and creative teacher she was. Students, parents, and staff loved her! The kids at both Broadmoor Elementary and Soaring Eagle were so lucky to have Kate as their teacher. Losing Kate is a big loss to our teaching community. She had the best smile and laugh! We will forever miss you Kate! Love, Suzanne Bayer
