Kathy L. Velasco

November 15, 1954August 25, 2020

Kathy Lee Velasco, 65, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on August 25, 2020 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was born in Denver, Colorado on November 15, 1954, to Lloyd Craver and Shirley Fahey. She was the eldest of six.

Kathy graduated from Adams City High School in 1973 and received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Phoenix in 2001.

Kathy married her high school sweetheart, Pete Velasco on October 6, 1974. Together they travelled to Okinawa and California before settling down in Byers, Colorado to begin their family. Kathy worked as a Procurement Specialist at the El Paso Corporation prior to becoming a full-time grandmother in her retirement.

Kathy looked forward to family holidays, road trips, marveling at Gods’ wonders in nature, and spending time working on home projects with Pete.

But her greatest joy was spending time spoiling her grandchildren. Kathy leaves behind to cherish her memory her best friend Pete; loving children, Jeff (Tabitha) and Robyn (Cory); precious grandchildren, Kloe, Austin, Dalton, Trevon, Colton and Maxson; mother, Shirley, father Lloyd and stepmother Carol; siblings, Karen, Patty, David, Roxie and Danny. Kathy is proceeded in death by her stepfather David Fahey.

My heart aches for your family. Kathy was so kind to me during my high school years, and I will never forget our time together. She took me in when she did not have to, and she cared about everyone who entered her home with so much love and patience. I will never forget one time vacuuming in her home and their little dog "Fritz" came after me as I got to close to his dog toy! Jeff and Robyn, I am so very sorry for your loss and hope that the memories of your momma help you cope with her absence. Please reach out if there is anything I can do. -Mindi

We were saddened to hear of Kathy's passing. Alex worked with her for many years at CIG and our sons grew up together. I always think of her and Pete on Halloween. They had so much fun dressing up and trick or treating. Rest easy Kathy, your battle has ended. Heartfelt thoughts and healing prayers to all the family.

What beautiful photos, that is how I will always remember Kathy - that great smile, a twinkle in her eye, and her laugh. She is such a wonderful and sweet lady, and a good friend. I wish I would have told her lately how much she means to me, and how much I love and admire her. She fought her illness valiantly, and her passing will leave a little less joy in the world.
My love and deepest sympathies to Pete, Jeff, Robyn, and families ~

On behalf of my husband Travis Gentry, you all are in our prayers. God has truly gained another Angel to watch over us. Much love and prayers

Kathy was a Mother Hen, she took care of her siblings, her husband, her children, grandchildren and anyone close to her. She answered questions when we were young, explained the facts of life, filled you in on the missing pieces and was just there always with a beautiful shy smile and understanding eyes.
When we were kids, I remember our Mom taught us a prayer, and until our sister Kathy died, I never dwelled on these words much. Naturally with 6 of us kids you were just thankful it was a short prayer so you could scoop up some lima beans and corn bread. The words were;
God is good
God is great
And we thank you
For our food

It is a prayer that reminds me that God is Good. We may not always understand His decisions, why He makes the choices He does but He is good always. He bestows upon us the beauty of each other, time together, the waxing and waning of relationships and the appreciation of the gifts He lends us while we are here. The gifts in each other and the beauty He surrounds us with.
God is great. That is a given and needs few words. He has created us and our world and with a wave of His hand He can take it away if so many forget that it is His. To Him and Him alone do we owe honor and adoration.
The last part of this simple prayer, and We thank you for our food. I always thought of food as something we consume but I realize it is much more than that. It is What feeds us, as in the people who fill our hearts, the energy from them that fuels our soul, the kindness in their eyes when they are helping us and the touch of a caring soul that leaves us feeling embraced.
Kathy fed us. She is Beauty, pure and simply put. Her smile, her demeanor, how she cared for all of us and took care of those she loved so selflessly. She is a rare gem very precious and irreplaceable.
After thinking through this prayer, I say she ‘is’ not ‘was’ because she is still within us teaching us to continue to grow and sustaining us with her memory. I am ever so hopeful I can emulate those qualities and I am sure she continues to hope so too.

Kathy’s sister Roxie created this, and it was so touching that I had to share it.
