Kenneth Richards Lovell, M.D. was born on October 27, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio to Edwin Glen Lovell and Edith Richards Lovell. When he was six months old his mother passed away. He was raised by his aunt, Blodwen Lovell, in Clydach Vale, Wales. He returned to Cleveland, Ohio at the age of 14 to reunite with his father.
Ken married his junior high school sweetheart, Rose Berwing Lovell, on November 6, 1948.
Dr. Lovell received his M.D. from The Ohio State University School of Medicine in 1956 and completed his rotating internship at St. Rita’s Hospital in Lima, Ohio. He served two years as a captain in the United States Air Force Medical Corps at Carswell Air Force Base in Ft. Worth, Texas. The family moved to Colorado Springs in 1958 where Dr. Lovell began his medical practice at Westside Medical Building at 2808 West Colorado Avenue then helped to build the Westside Family Health Center at 2020 West Colorado Avenue, where he practiced until his retirement.
During his forty-year career in family medicine on the west side of Colorado Springs, Dr. Lovell cared for many generations of patients and was considered a skilled diagnostician, trusted adviser, and compassionate physician. Dr. Lovell was one of the first physicians in Colorado to become certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, a status he maintained until his retirement. He was also a member of the American Medical Association.
He served in numerous professional capacities including Treasurer of the Colorado Medical Society; Treasurer of the Pikes Peak Chapter of the Colorado Academy of Family Practice; and Chief of Family Practice at Penrose, St. Francis, and Memorial Hospitals. He also served as Chief of Staff at St. Francis Hospital for two terms. In 2005 Dr. Lovell was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Memorial Hospital.
In addition to his active medical practice, Dr. Lovell served as an Elder at Gateway Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir. Ken enjoyed fishing, hiking, camping, and skiing in the Colorado outdoors with his family, friends, and dogs. He was an avid gardener and traveled extensively with Rose. He took pride in his Welsh heritage. Ken was a loyal fan of The Ohio State University and Air Force Academy football teams.
Dr. Lovell was preceded in death by Rose, his loving wife of 59 years. He is survived by their children: John Lovell of Longmont, Colorado; Mark Lovell, M.D., of Denver, Colorado; Linda Lovell Boyd of Wetmore, Kansas; and Mary Lovell of Lakewood, Colorado, as well as by ten grandchildren.
A memorial service celebrating Dr. Lovell’s life will be held at Gateway Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 12, 2011.
