Lillian Elizabeth Maxwell was born on January 4th, 1937, to Milton and Rosie Ann Maxwell in Hutto, Texas. She was the eldest of six children, all of whom worked as sharecroppers in the early days, picking cotton. Liz would often tell stories of the working in the cotton fields under the hot Texas sun. The experience shaped her strong work ethic and desire to ensure her children never had to endure such extreme living and working conditions.
Fondly known by most as Liz, she was a happy lady and enjoyed life. Her travels moved her from Texas to New Mexico and then to Omaha, Nebraska where she accepted Christ at age 40 while attending Southside Baptist Church, living a fulfilling life serving Him.
While raising her children, Liz worked in the hair care industry in addition to being a visiting nurse, a job she truly enjoyed and was exceptionally good at.
In 1981, Liz married Russell Lambert Sr and they continued their life in Omaha until moving to Colorado Springs in 2003. Once in Colorado Springs they discovered Heart of the Springs (HOTS) Church and made it their church home. They enjoyed greeting visitors at HOTS and participating in the Seniors Bible Study. Liz also enjoyed playing BUNCO. Cooking and trying new foods were a favorite pastime, but she loved her grandchildren far and above most anything else...although animals Calypso, Scooter, Bootsie, Maggie and Sheba were a close second.
Liz is remembered by her surviving children John Young (Deb), Omaha, NE; Evelyn Young, Memphis, TN; Ronald Sheppard (Christy), Colorado Springs, CO; her six (6) grandchildren Jonathan (Shanika), Matthew, Sydney, Kristen, Seth, and Sage; and her five (5) great grandchildren: Sariah, Jaleel, Jordyn, Jaicee and Amir; her two sisters, Earnestine Maxwell of Omaha, NE, and Dorothy Lawhorne (Vincent), of Alamogordo, NM; as well as a host of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Russell Jr., Brian and Carnell Lambert (Houston, TX), Russell's sons.
Liz was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Olla, Emmett and Leon, and her two daughters Christine Ragsdale and Sharon Stevens.
"Our mother enjoyed life which included praising God, praying for people, good music and singing. She sent us to church even before she went...but when Jesus saved her, she built a foundation for Christ, bringing so many to the love of Christ with her from her South Omaha days, all the way to new friends in Colorado Springs. We will miss her smile and her goofy ways that made us laugh out loud so often. Thanking God for all she taught us with an iron fist and a heart of gold...she has earned her wings. For now, we say so long Mom!"
Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
