February 27, 1920 ~ September 12, 2010
Lucille V. Cooper, age 90, moved to Colorado Springs in 1994 to be with her daughter, granddaughter, and son-in-law. She passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at her daughter’s home in Colorado Springs. She was preceded in death by both her parents and all her brothers and sisters.
Lucille was born in Baltimore, Maryland on February 27, 1920 to Julius and Caroline Simonaire. She was the youngest of eight children. Lucille attended school until the 10th grade. She quit school to go to work to help her family during the depression, but later went back and earned her GED. Lucille always strived to better herself in order to support her only child. Each job she took represented advancement in the work place. Her final job was working for the Federal Government at the Deptment of Defense in Fort Meade, Maryland. She took great pride in her work and in serving others.
Lucille was devoted to her family and to her daughter and granddaughter. Through the years she supported her brothers and sisters in times of need, as well as celebrating joys. At various times she took care of one of her brothers and two of her sisters when they were unable to care for themselves.
An avid opera fan, she listened to operas on her stereo, and had the opportunity to hear Pavoratti and Placido Domingo perform at the Kennedy center in Washington, DC. The past few years she enjoyed attending the live HD transmissions of the Metropolitan Opera at the Tinseltown Theater with her daughter and son-in-law.
As a child, Lucille wanted to be a dancer. Because her family was poor and she needed to help support them, she was unable to pursue that dream, but she loved ballroom dancing and often went dancing with friends. She was sought after as a dance partner because she was light on her feet, graceful, and could follow anyone. One of her favorite dances was the tango. When she came to Colorado Springs, she enjoyed dancing at the Hancock Senior Center.
She was a tough woman with a heart of gold. She cherished her friends and family. She kept in contact with many people she knew from Maryland, as well as family scattered in various places. She is survived by her daughter, granddaughter, and son-in-law. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or the Hancock Senior Center in Colorado Springs.
Lucille was cremated. Her cremains will be with her daughter until the time of her daughter’s death, as Lucille wished to be buried with her daughter and son-in-law.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 24, 2010 at First Lutheran Church, 1515 N. Cascade in Colorado Springs.Arrangements under the direction of Swan-Law Funeral Directors, Colorado Springs, CO.
