Major David Anthony Voelker, USAF

David was born on July 1, 1946, in East St. Louis, Illinois, to Sylvester and Marguerite (Bernasco) Voelker.

From an early age, David felt called to a life of service through the priesthood. In 1973, he was ordained a Catholic priest for the Diocese of Belleville, Illinois. Throughout his ministry, Fr. Dave served as an associate pastor at parishes in East St. Louis, Caseyville, Centreville, and Belleville. He also taught religion courses at Althoff Catholic High School in Belleville.

In 1990, with the permission of his bishop, Fr. Dave answered another call to serve, joining the United States Air Force as a Catholic chaplain. His military career took him to duty stations in Mississippi, the Azores, South Dakota, Alaska, Colorado, and Korea. He also deployed in support of military operations in Europe and Southwest Asia. Of his many assignments, Fr. Dave found serving in combat areas especially meaningful, believing that was where he was needed most.

Beyond his dedication to faith and country, Fr. Dave was known for his generous hospitality and love of bringing people together. He enjoyed welcoming colleagues, friends, and family into his home, often preparing delicious homemade meals. He particularly enjoyed organizing spaghetti suppers for military personnel, providing not only a good meal but also an opportunity for fellowship and camaraderie.

Fr. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Marguerite Voelker; his brother, Mike Voelker; and his nephew, Tom Voelker.

He is survived by his son, Fernando DeBettencourt Voelker; daughter-in-law, Kimberley Voelker; grandsons, Jayden and Bennett Voelker; brother, Rev. James Voelker; nephew, John Voelker; and many cousins and dear friends.

Fr. Dave will be remembered for his dedication to serving others, his outgoing personality, irreverent humor, and generous heart. His presence will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

Fr. Dave's cremated remains were interred at Pikes Peak National Cemetery in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
