Our mother passed peacefully on a beautiful Sunday morning surrounded by family. She was an indomitable spirit who loved music, poetry, and a well-written story. She was one of three surviving children born to Henry Washington and Helen Harris Creeger in Tiffin, Ohio.
When she was five years old the family moved to Richmond, California where she could see lights on the Bay Bridge from her bedroom window.
Following graduation from Richmond Union High School she entered the University of California, Berkley and graduated in 1944 with a Bachelor of Arts. She maintained it was the foundation for a lifetime of learning. Until her death she read a book a month as well as the Wall Street Journal.
In 1943 she married Stanley Edward Chatfield, a handsome fighter pilot who flew missions in North Africa, Sicily and Anzio in a P39 emblazoned with the name: “Marge”. Their 71 years together produced 6 children, 16 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She raised a family in three continents and crossed the Atlantic and Pacific several times by ship. Despite being married to a pilot, she was terrified of flying. In 1969 they built the family’s “home in the woods” where she lived independently until her recent illness.
Our sadness at her passing is tempered by knowing she is reunited with her husband Stan, son Jeffrey Alan and daughter Barbara Allison. Her surviving children: Steven, Christine, Catherine and Keith will gather with their families at a memorial service on May 5th at St. Matthias Cemetery.
