Marjorie Alexia Byers was born in Newark, NJ to Helen Louise Burnett and John Jackson. She spent much of her childhood in Wilmington NC where she lived with her grandparents Alexander Lawrence and Olga Exum, along with her sister Rachel Lakes Bingham and cousins Earl and Marcus Jacobs.
Marjorie grew up attending segregated schools in Wilmington, NC and Columbus, GA. While attending Carver High School in Columbus GA she met Bernard Byers, they married shortly after graduating high school and remained together until Bernard’s death in 2022.
After graduating from Carver, Marjorie was one of the first students to integrate Columbus College in 1966.
Marjorie was a master storyteller and would often tell stories from her childhood to her children, Joy Byers, Kelli Byers Hooper (Virgil) and BJ Byers (Neely), and a very special niece, Vickie Battle (Ken).
She was an active grandmother; attending plays and basketball tournaments, and taught all of her grandchildren to cook various recipes. Rachel Erazo (Jordon) was the first to call her Ma. Samuel Hooper, Josephina Boston, Jasmine Byers, Shawne Byers, Laura Hooper and Cameron Byers followed suit. She had three great grandchildren, Lilly, Giovanni and Gideon Erazo.
For over 20 years Marjorie was the marketing/business mastermind behind the family business, Bernie’s Cakes and Catering.
Marjorie was a devoted and faithful Jehovah's Witness for much of her adult life. During the last 18 months she was a Pioneer and spent many days in field service.
Marjorie left the world suddenly on October 13. Weeks before she was driving all over San Antonio, and days before she took many of the grandkids to lunch.
While Marjorie's exit was sudden, her impact on the world was large, wide and indelible.
