Mark Henry Townsend, a beloved husband, father, educator, and community member, passed away on June 30, 2026, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Born on September 4, 1954, in Denver, Colorado, Mark lived a life dedicated to learning, teaching, and enriching the lives of those around him.
Mark and Jody Dunsmore, high school sweethearts, were married September 1974 in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.
Mark’s passion for education began early and took him far. In 1971, he had the unique opportunity to study as an exchange student in Montevideo, Uruguay. This experience sparked his lifelong love for language and culture. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from the University of Northern Colorado in March 1976. He also received his Colorado Education Certification to teach at the high school level. Later, he became an Enrolled Agent for the IRS in 1990.
Mark’s career was marked by his dedication to teaching and helping others succeed. He began his professional journey at the University of Northern Colorado (1976–1978) before moving on to Metro State College (1979–1982). His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Townsend Tax Services, which he operated from 1985 to 2006. However, it was in the classroom where Mark truly found his calling. He taught English at Drake Junior High School from 1994 to 1995 before joining Manitou Springs High School from 1997 to 2004. There, he taught both English and Spanish and served as the Spanish department chair. During his tenure, he also sponsored the school’s Mock Trial program, inspiring countless students with his dedication and mentorship.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mark was deeply committed to his family and community. Mark loved being a grandfather to Jayce and Arya. He shared many joyful moments camping, bowling, hunting, and fishing with loved ones. A devoted father, he coached his sons’ soccer and baseball teams for several years. Mark also gave generously of his time through volunteer work with both the Colorado PTA and National PTA. He served as Colorado PTA’s President and on National PTA Board of Directors.
Mark’s creative side shone through in his love for crafts. He enjoyed working with plastic canvas, creating stained glass pieces, and hooking rugs and tapestries—hobbies that reflected his patience and attention to detail.
Mark is survived by his loving wife, Jody Townsend; his two sons, Robert “Bob” Townsend and Lucas “Luke” Townsend(Jennifer); grandchildren Jayce and Arya; as well as countless friends and former students who were touched by his kindness and wisdom. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry “Doc” McDonald Townsend and Marguerite “Peggy” Ball Townsend.
Mark Townsend will be remembered as a man who lived with purpose—dedicated to education, family, creativity, and service. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. A Celebration of Life will be held on September 4, 2026. For details, contact [email protected]
