Mary Frances Mayes, 90, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026. She was born in Colorado Springs to first generation Italian immigrants and was proud of her Italian heritage and being a native of this beautiful City. She shared many stories of how life used to be and how the City had grown and changed through the years. As a teenager, she worked at Lerner’s downtown and loved roller skating. On the skating rink is how she met her husband of 50 years, James Mayes. They married on January 28, 1956 and had three children. Mary was a devoted and loving homemaker and worked side by side in two businesses with her husband, in which they were self-employed. The first was a grocery store, Mayfield Supers, in Fountain, Colorado, from1968-1983. They loved having a business in a smaller community where they knew most of their customers on a first named basis and made many lifelong friends. The second was a liquor store, Beer Wine and Bourbon Liquors from 1986-1996 where she enjoyed working in retail and servicing the public. Mary was a master at balancing raising a family and her work life. She was a woman of strong faith in God and loved attending St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She was one of the original founding members that helped to petition homeowners in various surrounding neighborhoods for the purpose of building a church in Stratton Meadows.
Mary is survived by her three children, son Jim Mayes (Tess), Daughter Janet Fish (Gerald), son Jerry Mayes (Aletha). Also, three grandchildren: Kenny Shugg (Charissa), Kandice Shugg and Joshua Shugg (Lindsey), nine great grandchildren, one niece, four nephews and many cousins. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband James Mayes, her parents Louis and Elizabeth Maccarini, her sister Angie Mantz (Albert), and brother Raymond Maccarini.
In conclusion, the family would like to offer special thanks to the caring professionals and caregivers at The Center at Centennial for their exemplary care, patience and genuine love for mom during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
