Mary Vada was born on Easter Sunday, April 20, 1924, to James and Vada Hyatt in Deming, New Mexico. Being the daughter of a prominent cattleman, Mary grew up on a ranch and was proficient riding horses, roping, bulldogging, and branding cattle. Mary also enjoyed participating in school and community events. In 1940, she was selected as Luna County Pinto Bean Queen; this title provided good humor for her family in the years to come.
Mary attended New Mexico A&M in Las Cruces, where she met the love of her life, Leo Thieme. They were married on July 17, 1945, in Las Cruces upon Leo’s return from World War II. Together they had four children; Thomas, Victoria, Patricia, and James. As the wife of an Army Officer, Mary elegantly entertained and utilized her many skills in support of her husband’s career. She was a loving mother who dedicated time and energy to her children and their activities creating lasting treasured memories. Throughout Leo’s military career, assignments took the Thieme family across the nation and around the world.
After Leo’s retirement, they settled in Aurora, Colorado. Mary pursued employment in executive administration within the financial industry. Upon Mary’s retirement, they built their forever home in Monument, Colorado where they were deeply rooted in family and cherished traditions with eleven grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. They found joy in their church, hosting gatherings, horseback riding, and hiking. After Leo’s passing in 1991, Mary remained steadfast in these endeavors as well as water aerobics, white water rafting and a love for reading. Her gentle kindness and grace touched the lives of everyone she met. Mary was an extraordinary woman that leaves a legacy of love and compassion we hold dearly in our hearts.
