Mary Margaret Darnell Wank passed away on November 14th, 2018 at the age of 90. She and her beloved twin Laura were born on January 12, 1928 in Cripple Creek, Colorado. Part of Mary’s childhood was spent in Illinois, but she was a Colorado girl through and through. Mary loved cats and all animals, sunshine and the blue skies of Colorado. She met her husband Jack in graduate school at Case Western Reserve in Ohio. They were both social workers, and gave of themselves to individuals and their communities throughout their careers. After raising their family of three children and many cats on the east coast for some years, Mary was very happy to move back to her beloved state of Colorado in 1978, where she lived ever since. The view of Pikes Peak from Mary’s living room window always filled her heart. Mary had a keen intelligence and was proud to belong to Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board. She was steadfastly loving and compassionate, and was always ready to share a conspiratorial giggle or a big belly laugh. Mary was the last survivor of her six siblings (Richard, Martha, Minnie, Owen, Frank and Laura) and her beloved husband Jack, and now has joined them. She is survived by her children, Julia, Steven and Sarah, their partners, Dave, Claudia, Todd, and Susan; grandchildren, Kiley, Julia, Max and Mary and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and friends. Mary will be greatly missed. The love she gave is carried by many.
She had asked that her family and friends celebrate her life with a simple graveside service under the Colorado sky. We have scheduled the service for 11:00am - 12:00pm on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Fairview Cemetery in Colorado Springs, followed by a Celebration of Life Gathering. We would be honored if you can join us.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, at www.HSPPR.org
