OBITUARY
Matthew Knieriem
November 15, 1933 – November 24, 2013
Matthew E. "Red" Knieriem was born on November 15, 1933 to Matthew A. and Ethel C. (Kelly) Knieriem in Nyack, NY. He married Carol A. Zabriskie on June 16th of 1956. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and generous supporter of those in need. He will be greatly missed. He graduated from Niagra University, Niagra Falls, NY in 1955 and was commissioned in the US Army via ROTC as a 2nd Lieutenant. During his 18 years in the Army he served in Vietnam and was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and the Meritous Service Award. Upon retirement from the army in 1972, he began working as a civil servant for the State of Colorado Division of Insurance. He retired from the state in 1998. He was an Ecumenical Minister for many years at Corpus Christi Church, Penrose Hospital, and regularly donated blood and platelets for the Penrose Blood Bank. He was an avid bowler, golfer, reader and he supported many local charities. He was an avid member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Pikes Peak US Bowling Congress, and Centennial Skating Club. He is survived by his wife and 5 children: Kathleen Marie McDermott (Patrick), Karen Marie Sulpizio (Steven), Matthew Douglas (Cheryl), Brian Edward (Karlyn), and Sharon Kae Lebron-Frank (Robert). He is also survived by 4 siblings: John (Carol), Mary Johnston (Lee), Anne Knieriem, and Patrick (Dorothea). He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers James and Micheal. Rosary Vigil at Swan Law Funeral Home, Sunday, Decemberr 1st, at 7 p.m. 501 N Cascade Ave. Celebration of Life will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Monday, Decmber 2nd at 11 a.m. 2318 N Cascade Ave.
