Mel is survived by his wife Barbra; children, Bryan (Stephanie) Herdt of Queen Creek, AZ; Shellene (Cory) Romero of Rio Rancho, NM; Kevin (Kris) Herdt of Colorado Springs, CO; siblings, Marilyn Einfalt of Scottsbluff, NE; Barbara Kyriss of Malvern, PA; Ed Herdt of Scottsdale, AZ; Mike Herdt of Alliance, NE; is preceded in death by his parents Mike and Freda Herdt. Mel had 7 Grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.
Mel was born on March 16, 1938 in Lyman, NE to Mike and Freda Herdt. He graduated from Gering High School (Gering, NE) in 1956. He married Barbra Battershell in 1960 and served in the Army National Guard from 1962-1967. He moved to Colorado Springs in 1973 and owned and operated Austin Bluffs Lighting from 1987 until his retirement in 2004.
Mel loved hunting, fishing, golf and Nebraska Cornhusker Football and was passionate about serving his community through the Colorado Springs SERTOMA club.
A memorial is scheduled for 10:00am, August 26, 2023 at Woodmen Valley Chapel, Stone Chapel, 290 E Woodmen Rd with a reception to follow. Matt Ferrell will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mel's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Empty Stocking Fund or Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
