I knew Mike and his family through the first church we attended upon moving to Colorado Springs in 1995, as well as through our jobs at The Navigators ever since that year. Known for his sage wisdom and kind heart, Mike was widely respected among all who worked with him. He was passionate about building God's Kingdom and sharing the love of Christ with everyone he met. All of us on the team love Jesus, but Mike had this depth of spirit that gently invited us to seek God even more. He was "all in."  We miss his presence tremendously and look forward to seeing him again one day.

Dear Grandpa,
I enjoyed learning things from you. Like playing cards, or drawing, or the one time you showed me how to play guitar. I'll miss the times I've spent with you, you made everything fun, like our shopping sprees to dollar tree and going out to eat. I'll miss the simpler times with you, like the conversations we had about anything and everything or the more exciting times like when you brought everyone to Casa Bonitas and the hotel for your birthday. I miss everything about you! You're smile that lit up the whole room or you're contagious laugh. I'll miss the way you put everyone else before you. I'll miss your kind encouraging words and presence. You were such a smart, kind, and giving person. You will forever be in my heart and always loved. Love you!

Tonya and Family,   Susan and I were so saddened to hear of Mike's passing and want to send our sincere wishes for God's comfort and abiding presence to be very real to you through this difficult time.  Mike was a good friend and faithful employee during our time together at The Navigators.  One of my favorite memories of Mike is from a time when he and I went to lunch with a donor.  Before lunch, Mike asked the server how he could pray for her.  She shared she was going through a challenging time in a key relationship.  Mike immediately took the initiative to pray for her, and after an enjoyable  lunch together, Mike told me he felt directed by God to leave our server a generous tip.  He then took out a $100 bill and slipped it to the server on our way out.  She immediately teared up and thanked Mike for the generous tip.  Mike turned and smiled, and told her it was God's money.   Another great memory of Mike is the handwritten scripture memory cards he took the initiative to write out, practice and commit to memory between dials.  At one point Mike had committed over 60 verses to memory - chapter and verse included.  Mike's heart was always to build great relationships with his assigned donors and he did this quite effectively, as evidenced in the many millions of dollars he raised for God's work through his calls.  

Mike never gave up, even when faced with multiple health concerns.  His "polite persistence" in his work spoke volumes to me as his manager and to his colleagues.  I will never forget Mike's warm smile, playful spirit and sincere kindness towards others.  Mike is dearly missed.  I look forward to seeing him again on the other side!    

Mike Haverland always had a word of encouragement for my life. He had an understanding of the pain people go through because he knew his own pain. 

A compasionate man who didn't learn this grace from a book, a sermon or a seminar.

 He was taught of God.  In short,I wanna be like Mike. 











  Mike was more than a friend to me, he was my big brother in the Lord. He would always embrace me with a smile that was so warm that it reflected the love of the Lord that was in his heart. He had this gift of making you laugh and it’s  only now that I realize it was the joy of the Lord that was his strength. 
  He was a loving and dedicated husband and father and he loved his grandchildren deeply.  Mike was a beautiful man of God who quietly went out of his way many times if there was a need within the body he would quietly fulfill it and reflect the love of Christ and give of himself. 
    I didn’t expect you to leave us so soon and I miss you so much my brother but I find comfort in knowing where you are now.  I will carry you with me always as your memory will live on in my heart. I love you “Mikey”!

I thank the Lord for my husband of over 40 years. I will always love him and miss him greatly until that day when I will see him again 💜

I have known Mike for well over thirty years, and he was a precious brother in Christ in every way, and a man who truly was a servant, focused on Jesus being seen in him, versus Mike being seen!  He was an incredible blessing for the ministry of the Navigators, including all who worked with the Navigators alongside him.  He will be greatly missed by his precious family, and Janie and I will be praying for his family.

A friend indeed is  a friend in need..   T HAT  who Mike always was a friend ready to lend a helping hand or word of wisdom  always with  a love from his heart. SO VERY  KNOWLEDGABLE ON THE WORD  OF GOD and sharing when needed.   THAT was MIKE to me.. ALWAYS A FRIEND ,NADINE HOCKETT

I met Mike about 20 years ago, when he reached out to me regarding support for The Navigators. 
 Living on the East Coast, I never met Mike, face to face, however we quickly became very close friends. 

I regarded him as a dear Brother, in Christ, and as a trusted prayer partner.  I will miss our conversations, times of sharing, and of prayer. Mike always expressed the deepest love and concern for his family and for others.

Although, we grieve, we do not grieve as those who are without Hope.  For Christ Himself is our Living Hope, to all who know and love Him.   And because of what Jesus accomplished, we will one day be reunited with Mike at the Great Wedding Feast of the Lamb. 

Godspeed my precious Brother, until that day! 
 And may the God of all Comfort bring great Comfort, Grace, and Peace to your family, during this time.



Mike was a Godly man. He was quick to reach out to those who were hurting and pray for God's love to minister to them. He was never in a rush when having a conversation with you. He was a generous person with both time and finances, always eager to bless others in need. He will be missed by many.

Mike was a truly great friend, brother and fellow minister.
I had the privilege of serving with Mike in the Colorado State prison system. I recall how Mike had the uncanny ability to remember each of the inmates names and the particular trials they had spoken to him about earlier.
We made a good teams as I did not have that gift. 
I recall how the various inmates would light up when they were informed that Mike would be attending the  upcoming Sunday.
Mike was real and inmates appreciate that. He severed as long as he was able and is, and will continue to be, missed.
It is comforting to know that  he and I will be reunited soon and that his feet are finally all healed up.

My dad was the dad that every girl needs and would be lucky to have. He was a once in a lifetime friend. He was the type of person that would give his last penny for someone in need. The type of person to put a smile on a strangers face and an impact on anyone he crossed paths with. He would do anything to make you laugh even if he was hurting on the inside. He experienced hardship in life yet he still chose to be joyful. He chose Hope over despair and faith over fear. He woke up every morning and chose to be thankful. How he lived his life reminds me to not let the cold world and storms harden your heart. He showed me how important it is to appreciate the little things in life and how they would end up being the big things. He taught me to give everything to God and stay in Gods peace in the midst of life’s chaos. Dad, your spiritual wisdom and devotion to Jesus is what inspires my faith today.  Michael, Jay, and I will miss you so much and think of you everyday. I’m thankful and blessed that God chose a one in a billion man to be my dad. 

It is so hard to write the words or explain how painful it is to loose someone as great as my dad. I felt his comfort and protection as a child and just as much as an adult. He brang so much joy with his infectious laugh and jokes. He showed so much compassion with his hugs and happy eyes.  I loved our dates as a child bingo was our favorite we would talk about what we would do with the money if we won. Of course my dad would always say he would help people who needed it he was always about helping everyone with their needs. When I had my 3 girls he not only loved my girls as a grandpa but also a father.  Some of my last memories with my dad were sitting in his office crying while listening to maverick city and hillsong and his talks educating us on the bible and heaven.

It's so hard to write all that is in my heart, but I just have to say that Mike was a wonderful husband and he loved well. The very thing that brought us together over 40 years ago was his love for God. Over all these years I never once saw his love for His Lord and Savior waver. The Lord was always the foundation of our marriage. Mike's love for me and His daughters and grandchildren was always verbalized to us. He used the word beautiful so much of the time to describe us from me on down to the youngest of our grandchildren. I would often during the day see him worshipping with a worship video and tears streaming down his face. I know He longed, as so many of us do who know and love Him, to be in the presence of the Lord as much as He could here on earth. That is what brings me comfort is that without a doubt he is in the presence of the Lord worshipping in a way we can only imagine. I miss him deeply but have the assurance I will see him again someday soon and join in worship with him for our most precious Savior. 

Mike and I often got together for lunch at a local fast food restaurant.  Mike was always open to the needs of others.  We made friends with several who frequented the place often.                          
One day a young woman came into the restaurant. She appeared to be homeless. She went from one table to another asking people for some loose change. She was shunned by everyone until she came to our table. Mike immediately responded to her with a generous offering, then seized upon the opportunity to pray for her to receive Christ. She was brought to tears, and accepted the Lord as her Savior.  She had been living in a car with her boyfriend for several years. We then asked the Lord to change their situation and open a door for housing and employment. 
A few weeks later we encountered her again at the same restaurant. She looked happy, and was full of joy.  Her boyfriend was standing outside of the restaurant, on the sidewalk. It so happened that a door had opened up to them for both housing and employment. My wife was with us at that time, and she quickly walked out, and led the young man to Jesus. Mike was always reaching out to those in need. I will miss him greatly.

As one of Mike's more than 600 friends through the Navigators, I can attest to how he sparked, strengthened and encouraged each of our walks with the Lord, even if we only spoke a few times a year. He shepherded all of us - his new friends, as well as those of us that have known him for more than 20 years. He will be dearly missed by hundreds and thousands of us.  I know that, in time, God will heal your hurt and that Mike's love continues in all the lives that he graced. God Bless!

I’ve known Mike over the past years as a wonderful brother-in-law.  Whenever we would catch up I’d look forward to long relaxed conversations about anything ranging from the Denver Broncos to theological discussions and everything in between.  It seems like he’d always have grandchildren around him… and I mean literally around him… all the time!  It seems like he’d either have his daughters or adult grandkids nearby in conversation or the younger grandkids climbing all over and around him.  His love for his Lord and his family were evident at all times.  When I married into the family, he was warm and welcoming and made me feel relaxed and at home from the start.  I know the hole that Tonya, her daughters, and her grandchildren will feel is a hole that will never go away; it can’t and it shouldn’t.  It should be a constant reminder of the love Mike had for each one of you.  You all continue to be in my prayers during this season of grief.  I will miss you, Mike!  And I look forward to that great reunion day when we will all be together again.  

Mike called Tony on December 27th just to chat and say thanks for the Christmas present. I was with Tony at the time, so I got to join the conversation. It was good catching up with Mike as it had been years since we talked with him. After sharing about the events of Christmas and how everybody was doing, Mike asked if we could send him a picture of the mountain we see from our porch so he could paint it. I find it humbling that I knew Mike for thirty years before realizing that he was not only an artist with words, but he also had a talent with the paintbrush capturing beautiful landscapes of places he’d been. In fact, there was a lot about Mike that I had only discovered in more recent years; his creativity, his deep love for Jesus, his ability to walk in forgiveness, and he seemed to really try to relate and understand people. (I’ve always appreciated Mike’s love for Tonya. You could tell by his gaze that after forty years he was just as smitten with my beautiful sister as he was the first time I met him. Mike’s love for his whole family was evident in the way that he was constantly surrounded by his daughters or grandchildren when we came to visit. It was easy to see that he loved each one and that his time with them was important to him.) As we neared the end of the conversation, what Mike shared was not only a gift for Tony and I, but I believe it was a gift from The Heart of The Lord especially to Tonya, the girls, the rest of the family, and also to Mike himself. Mike read us a poem (“I’ve Given Up”, posted separately on this site) he had recently written. We could feel the power of God’s anointing as he spoke with passion and conviction conveying words not only of personal experience, but also words that were prophetic. Although Jesus was preparing Mike for his journey home, He was also giving his family that blessed assurance that Mike is okay and that one day we will all be together again.

I am very shocked and saddened about Mike's passing. I cannot imagine how devastated you all are. Mike was a wonderful, selfless person and will be missed very much. I am always here if any of you ever want to reach out. You are all in my thoughts.

Dear Tonya and Family,
I was so saddened to hear of Mike's passing and promotion to glory.  I was part of the team that interviewed Mike for his position with The Navigators 30 years ago and was impressed by his faith, positive attitude and love for the Lord.  Those attributes characterized him throughout his years of service with The Navigators.

I met Mike through the Navigator’s ministry. He was always such a great encourager.  I will miss him. 

I wish to express my condolences to his family.
