

Jay was born July 13, 1948 in Denver, Colorado to Joan and Marion Barnwell. He was one of eleven children. He grew up in Denver enjoying rides in the mountains, skiing, flying small aircraft and enjoying life with his many siblings.
He graduated from Machebeuf High School, class on 1966. He attended University of Colorado while pursuing a career as an Airline Pilot. He started instructing at Arapahoe Airport and traffic reporting for a radio station.
He met and married Nancy in 1970. They welcomed two children - Marc and Mike.
Unable to get in the Air Force, He pursed every license available in General Aviation. He was hired by Flying Tigers in 1971. Flying Tigers was the first American Volunteer Group who fought against the Japanese in China during World War II. It was an elite group of Fighter Pilots. It was here that Jay excelled in his ability to instruct. He was one of their most sought after instructors.
In 1988, Flying Tiger competitor FedEx bought the Airline and the two companies merged. They were transferred to Memphis, TN. He was hired as the Chief Pilot of FedEx. After that stint, he continued working as a Flight Instructor and Line Pilot.
After 10 years, they returned to Colorado Springs, Jay was hired at the Air Force Academy as Tow Pilot. He also was a trustee for the Falcon Foundation. The Falcon Foundation promotes the leadership and cultural development of cadets with the financial support and technical advice.
He was a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. It is a Catholic order of knighthood under the protection of the Holy See. The Order aids the Church in the Holy Land to strengthen the practice of Christian Life amongst its members.
Jay retired in 2013 and began volunteer work for the Lady of the Pines Catholic Church. He ran the Stewardship program. He has served in this position for 9 years. He also was Chair of Finance Council, Pastoral Council. He assisted as Sacristan and an Acolyte, Eucharistic Minister and Communion to the Homebound.
Jay leaves behind his wife, Nancy; children Marc (Amanda), Michael (Jennifer); his adorable grandchildren Cade, Caleb, Will, Corbin, Elle, and Caraline; siblings Betty, Rosemary, Bob, Janie, Mary Lu, Paul, Greg and David. He was preceded in death by Brian and Gene.
Services will be held at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church, 11020 Teachout Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80908. A rosary will begin at 11:00 am, mass at 11:30 am, and a reception to follow at 1:00 pm.
