Monte Lynn Scaggs, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather died unexpectedly at his home in Peyton on Monday, December 10, 2018. Monte was born in Las Vegas, Nevada to George Lynn and Louise (Garlin) Scaggs on August 27, 1942. Monte, his sister, Yolanda, and brother, Jim, were all raised in Las Vegas where he graduated from Rancho High School.
Monte was a hard worker having started working at the age of 11 at Gilbert's Market in Las Vegas. He then worked as a firefighter with the Clark County Fire Department for several years while earning his teaching degree at Nevada Southern University (now UNLV). He taught high school until he decided to continue his education. He attended Gonzaga University Law School in Spokane, Washington where he earned his Juris Doctorate. He subsequently practiced law in Washington and Colorado for 30 memorable and rewarding years. After retiring from his law practice, Monte returned to his love of education and became a substitute teacher in Peyton, Ellicott, and several D49 schools. He truly loved teaching and was affectionately known for his storytelling. He seemed to have a life experience for every topic and could magically produce items from his "Mr. Frizzle" briefcase to bring his stories to life. Monte had a personality larger than life. He loved people. He loved learning and teaching. He loved baseball, music, and telling stories. But most of all, he loved his family.
Monte is survived by his wife of 28 years, Donna R. (Griswold) Scaggs of Peyton. He is also survived by his eight children, daughter Lori Cobb (spouse Brian) of Ephrata, Washington , son David Scaggs (spouse Nanette) of Smith River, California, son Jeffrey Scaggs of Boise, Idaho, daughter Claire (Wendy) Busacker (spouse Brandon) of Boise, Idaho, son Zachary, of Colorado Springs, and sons Ryan, Quinn, and Logan all of Peyton. He is also survived by his "older" sister, Yolanda Scaggs of Las Vegas, Nevada. Additionally, he leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren all of whom he was so very proud. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Louise Scaggs, his brother James Garlin, and his beautiful granddaughter, Kelly Linn Cobb.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 10:00 am at Ridgeview Elementary School in Colorado Springs. In true Monte-fashion, this will not be a time to mourn, but a time to celebrate life and to share stories. There will also be a family Celebration of Life this spring in the Pacific Northwest for all of his family in Washington, Idaho, and California.
