Norman Alfred Hamel, 88, of Colorado Springs, Colorado passed away on Monday June 20, 2022. Norman was born on October 17, 1933 to Victor and Cecelia Hamel and had three siblings, Paul Hamel, Rita Emond, and Claire Dionne. Norman graduated from Lowell Technical Institute and received a Bachelor of Science in Textile Chemistry.
On August 7, 1954, Norman married Ann Hamel and together they had eight children, Nadine Tyler, Michael Hamel, Catherine Bracken, Richard Hamel, Timothy Hamel, Norman Hamel, Anne Parkhurst, and James Hamel. He worked in the United States Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel flying KC-97 and KC-135 aircrafts. Norman was a member of the Holy Apostles Catholic Church and had a passion for flying, gardening, cribbage, bridge, pinochle, helping friends and neighbors, and spending time with family.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Hamel; his eight children, Nadine Tyler, Michael Hamel, Catherine Bracken, Richard Hamel, Timothy Hamel, Norman Hamel, Anne Parkhurst, and James Hamel; his 22 grandchildren, James Bracken, Timothy Bracken, Christopher Tyler, Elizabeth Tyler Hearne, Taylor Bracken, Michelle Hall, Trevor Hamel, Matthew Hamel, Brooklyn Hamel, Catherine Tyler, Andrew Tyler, Rebekah Tyler, Sarah Tyler, Connor Hamel, Griffin Hamel, Emily Parkhurst, Jackson Hamel, Katharine Hamel, Berkeley Hamel, Nina Hamel, Parker Hamel, and Avery Hamel; his eight great-grandchildren, Adelaide Leary, Gabriel Tyler, Kieran Bracken, Alexander Bracken, Robert Hearne IV, Xavier Tyler, Mila Guzman, and Rory Hearne; as well as his sister, Claire Dionne.
Norman was an active member at Holy Apostles Catholic Church for 41 years, since 1981 when he and his family moved to Colorado Springs. Norm was an avid bridge, pinochle, and cribbage player, and enjoyed gardening with his family and visiting friends to play cards. Norm cared about his family more than anything, and enjoyed its depth greatly over the years. Norm was a fun-loving spirit, who always goofed off with his grandkids and enjoyed being the life of the party. He connected a multitude of friends and family members and enjoyed socializing with them all. He had so much pride for his garden and shared his pickles and vegetables with everyone. He will always be remembered for his huge heart, contagious smiles, and strict yet loving personality.
A Memorial Mass will be Friday, August 5, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Holy Apostles Catholic Church in Colorado Springs. Inurnment will be Monday, August 8, 2022 at 10:00 am at Pikes Peak National Cemetery.
