Norman "Dave" Nelson

February 9, 1948 – April 22, 2026
Obituary of Norman "Dave" Nelson
IN THE CARE OF

Mountain View Funeral & Cremation

Norman “Dave” Nelson, 78, died April 22, 2026. Born February 9, 1948, of Norman Nelson and Ola Irene Yeager, in Reno, Nevada, Dave retired to Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Dave grew up in Globe, Arizona, and through steady effort and determination paid his own way through college at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he earned a degree in Nuclear Engineering. That same resolve would remain a hallmark of his life—paired with a ready wit that made time with him lighter and laughter easier.

Dave worked as a cost/schedule engineer for several firms during the engineering, construction, and start-up of several nuclear power plants. He had the grit necessary to see complex projects through with care and persistence.

In 1969, Dave married Ellen Hollenstein. They had no children. Dave is survived by a half-brother, Ken Brown of Phoenix, Arizona, and a half-sister, Norma Newell of Reno, Nevada.

A man who loved being outside in God’s creation, Dave found joy in hiking, skiing, fishing, and riding over rough terrain in his side-by-side. He built a Cobra (kit car) with his friend, and after retirement he climbed most of the 14ers in Colorado and skied every slope he could get to. His love of the open road and wide horizons also carried him to all National parks in the lower 48.

Dave gave generously of his time in service to others. He volunteered at Tri-Lakes Cares Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity, Springs Rescue Mission, and the Marian House. In 2022 he was awarded the Knights of Columbus Colorado Family of the Year.

Those who knew Dave often spoke of how easy it was to like him—how his humor put people at ease, and how his generosity showed up in both small kindnesses and steady presence.

Dave quietly suffered from severe heart disease and joint pain. He told many people, “If something happens, don’t call 911.” He was ready to move on and meet the Lord.

With gratitude, the family acknowledges everyone who has made Dave’s life full of fun, laughter, and love.
