

Phyllis Brothers Long, 87, died at her home in Colorado Springs on Wednesday, September 26, 2012. She was born in Sterling, Kansas, to Irving and Blanche Brothers. Phyllis spent most of her school years in Colorado Springs, graduating from what was then Colorado Springs High School (Palmer), Class of 1942.
She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Colorado College with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology (Magna Cum Laude) in 1945. This is where she met Edward “Ted” Thornton Long who became her husband. Following graduation from CC Phyllis attended Michigan State University where she achieved a master’s degree in Sociology in 1946. Phyllis and Ted were married in Shove Chapel in 1947 and Ted’s career in the U.S. Foreign Service took the couple on State Department postings all over the world: Santiago, Chile; Barranquilla, Colombia; Genoa and Rome, Italy; Caracas, Venezuela; Panama Canal Zone; and Brussels, Belgium. Between foreign assignments they made their home in Bethesda, Maryland.
After Ted’s retirement they moved back to Colorado Springs where Phyllis became a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was otherwise active in her sorority (Kappa Kappa Gamma) and the Tuesday Luncheon Club.
Phyllis is survived by her brother Dwight Brothers (Sue) and two other sisters – in – law, Nancy Brothers and Janice Welty (Jim). Other survivors include three children: Stephen Long (Eleanor), David Long (Jane), and Elizabeth Gifford (Gordon); eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Shove Chapel on the Colorado College Campus at 11AM on Saturday, October 27, 2012. Family friends are requested to make any memorial donations to the charities of their choice.
