Born the third of five children, Mom had had three brothers Clarence Howard, Asa Lee Jr., Larry Eldon and one sister, Ethel Jean.
Her father worked as a farmer and rancher throughout Northeastern Colorado. Mom often told stories about her childhood days in Dillon, Castle Rock and Strasburg. While attending schools she was involved in many activities and was a majorette.
Mom first learned about Jehovah’s Witnesses as young girl when a neighbor shared bible truths with her and our grandma. Mom was baptized and served Jehovah faithfully for over 70 years.
Mom was working in Denver, Colorado when she met our dad, Gailen, and they were married in Denver on March 3, 1953; a union, which lasted over 59 years.
Mom and Dad taught their five children Randy, Gail, Greg Krislyn and Kevin the value of hard work, which helped us become the responsible adults we are today.
As each of her children married, she welcomed new sons and daughters into the family as if they’d always been there and doting on her grandchildren was just a bonus.
Some of Mom’s happiest moments were when the house was full of family and friends. She made sure everyone had their favorite foods. Known by many as “the pumpkin bread lady”, she was a talented cake decorator creating many beautiful wedding and special occasion cakes for friends and family.
Mom had a quick wit and loved to talk! She never met a stranger she couldn’t talk to. One of her favorite pastimes was playing Shanghai Rummy with friends and family; showing no mercy and almost always winning. She also enjoyed solving jigsaw and sudoku puzzles.
Mom is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gailen, and her four siblings. She is survived by her five children; Randy (Sue) Filkin, Gail Grady, Greg (Ellie) Filkin, Krislyn (Gary) Wright, Kevin Filkin; 13 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren, and a cherished extended family of nieces, nephews and close friends.
Mom’s strong faith in the resurrection comforted her in the final days of her life. One of her favorite songs, “He Will Call” became especially meaningful after our dad died. We continue to be comforted by Jehovah’s assurance that we will see her again; young, beautiful and full of vigor. It’s “Just Around the Corner”
