Born on October 13, 1947 in Denver, CO, Randy was the son of Richard Woodard and Jean (Woodard) McCleary. After graduation from La Jolla Country Day school he received a BA in English Literature and Master’s Degree in Education from the University of San Diego. Randy began his professional career at the University of California, Riverside moving to California State University at Long Beach before landing at the University of California, San Diego where he spent over twenty years until his retirement. Over the course of those twenty years Randy advised Disabled Student Services, Student Government, Student Organizations, Fraternities and Sororities as well as being a mentor for a countless number of students. One of Randy’s favorite parts of his job at UCSD was working on programming for concerts and events. After retirement, Randy and Audrey (his wife of 45 years) moved to Colorado Springs to be closer to his family.
Randy was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his stepmother Francis (Bunny) Woodard and stepfather Eugene McCleary. He was also preceded in death by his beloved twin sister Lynne Woodard Stewart. Also to be noted are Randy’s canine “angels” Tubby and Star.
Randy is survived by his wife, Audrey, sisters Patty (Bruce) Cameron, Marsha Lee and Judy Jones (Jean Keeley – deceased), brother-in-law Chris (Kathy) Heilmann, sister-in-law Lois (Dan) Heath as well as twelve nieces and nephews (Denise, Christine, Eric, Alex, Garrett, Dalton, Dave, Jeff, Kendall, Jason, Lindsey and Ashley) and 22 great-nieces and nephews. In addition, Randy is survived by a truly unique dog, Blu (if you know, you know).
Despite a 61 year physical disability, Randy embraced his life with positivity and devotion to the people he loved and the students he mentored who made him so proud. His motto was “Never give up. Never surrender”.
In lieu of flowers donations to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Humane Society of Pikes Peak, Care and Share Food Bank or World Central Kitchen would be appreciated. A Celebration of Life for Randy will be planned for a future date.
