passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her children on March 1, 2024.
Renate, as a military wife, came to the United States in 1962, and settled in Colorado Springs in 1965. She worked at the Broadmoor Hotel, owned an upholstery business, and earned an associates degree at El Paso County Community College, and in 1983 she was proud to earn her US citizenship. She owned Papa Jo's for 34 years where she made many lifelong friends, and her philanthropic heart actively sponsored Wounded Warriors, St. Jude, Care and Share, Pikes Peak Hospice, Firefighters Combat Challenge, and various other charities.
Fiercely independent, Renate was a single mother who loved and enjoyed, traveling, reading, history, cooking wonderful meals, and her scratch tickets, but mostly spending time with her family and many friends.
Renate is survived by her children Angelika Wortmann and husband Juergen of Munich, Germany, Raymond Johnson and wife Melody of Mustang, OK, Joseph Johnson and wife Winter of Divide, CO, Lorraine Brown and husband Richard of Colorado Springs, Michael Johnson of Los Angeles, CA, and Tammy Bailey (Scrappy) of Colorado Springs. She is also survived by her grandchildren Bryan Johnson, Chris Johnson (Christoph Isbjorn), Jordan Johnson, Madison Brown, Brenda Greenwald, Stephanie Johnson, Angela Ostlund, Michael Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Myranda Johnson, and 10 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter Shirley Johnson.
We would like to thank Pikes Peak Hospice, and her wonderful doctors, Dave Rosenbaum and Amy Battaglia for their outstanding care.
Renate will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at Cross Fellowship on 4808 Palmer Park Blvd in Colorado Springs on March 11, 2024 at 11:00am followed by a reception at the Sky Box Lounge.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to one of her favorite charities in her name.
