Born on July 5, 1934, he was the youngest of eight children of his parents, Thurmand and Jennie Holland. Richard grew up and worked in an agricultural community in Indiana, learning the use of farming equipment and machinery at an early age. His fascination with mechanics and how things operated continued into his adulthood.
Joining the United States Air Force immediately after graduating high school, he faithfully served his country as a career man specializing in aircraft maintenance and management for 28 years.
Completing his military career, he then worked 15 years for the U.S. Postal Service, and another 15 years for Ace Hardware in Colorado Springs.
Along with those endeavors, he was very involved in supporting his church, attending Sunday School, working with the youth, and singing with the choir at Academy Christian Church of Colorado Springs for many years.
Richard had a great passion for aircraft and flying, later obtaining his pilot’s license. He was an avid bowler and fisherman, enjoying the outdoors with his loyal dog, Sammy. In his younger days, he played basketball and softball with his church team.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Richard Holland Jr. of Salida, and daughter, Christine Holland of Falcon; five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at Academy Christian Church, 1635 Old Ranch Road, Colorado Springs, at 10:30 am on March 30th, with visitation prior to the service, and a reception immediately following.
Richard will be laid to rest at the Pikes Peak National Cemetery with full military honors.
