Robert Leon Williams passed away early on September 18, 2018, at the age of 96. Bob was born in 1922 near Lansing, Michigan, and his family soon moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he graduated from South Side High School. Bob started a 40-year career at International Harvester in November of 1940, interrupted in 1942 by his service in WWII, when he was inducted into the Army, 3rd Armored Artillery Battalion, 9th Armored Division.
Bob’s intelligence was quickly noticed, and the Army sent him to Specialized Training at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado. On August 26, 1944, Bob boarded the Queen Mary for Scotland. He crossed the English Channel in September 1944, three months after D-Day, joining the artillery near the Battle of the Bulge.
After returning to the USA, Bob rejoined IH and was trained for a career in computer programming and eventually became a systems analyst. In 1948, he married Jeanette Ruth Ehrman. Jeanette’s son, Jerry, was 5 at the time. In 1950, their daughter Linda was born.
After retirement, Bob and Jeanette moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Bob started a second career as Senior Systems Analyst for Bernalillo County, staying with the County for 10 years (until 1994). There they enjoyed the company of Jeanette’s sister and family, and also became members of the “UFF DA” band.
In 2002, Bob and Jeanette moved to a retirement community in Colorado Springs to be near their daughter Linda and her husband George. Jeanette passed away in 2007, and Bob continued to live there until October 2017. During his time alone, he taught himself a new computer language and learned to play the game of bridge (age 88).
Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette, two sisters, Marge and Doris, and his brother Bill. He is survived by his son, Jerry Stout, daughter Linda Nicholos, son-in-law George Nicholos, grandson, Alex Nicholos, granddaughter, Stephanie Saunders, her husband Mark, and their two daughters, Eryn and Rylee.
