

Stephen was born in Tribune, Kansas on September 1, 1955 to father James Everett Burnside and mother Alice Marie Jacques. Steve was the middle child with an older sister Cindy and younger sister Brenda. Toward the end of 1955 the Burnside family moved to Security and Colorado Springs until 1972. Steve and his dad moved to the ranch near Ellicott, CO in 1972. Steve started attending Ellicott High School in 1972, where he met the love of his life, Carol Lea Wheeler, on August 17, 1974 Steve and Carol wed at a small church in Calhan, CO.
After a brief move to Chadron Nebraska following the wedding, Steve and Carol relocated back to Ellicott, CO., and preceded to start a family. Derek Stephen Burnside was born on November 9, 1980, with Chad Everett Burnside following on June1, 1983. Steve and Carol built their first home together on 40 acres near Ellicott, where they raised their two boys. Steve loved to make people laugh. A dedicated worker and provider, Steve always prided himself on a job well done. Steve worked for the Ellicott School District, and Joy Manufacturing, before he started as a part time employee for the asphalt company, Broderick and Gibbons. Even through multiple buyouts of the company, Steve worked diligently to rise through the ranks. At the time of his retirement in 2012 from LaFarge Steve was the Colorado Regional Manager of Asphalt.
After retirement Steve golfed as much as possible. He loved golfing with his buddies at Antler Creek, and many other courses around the state and even out of state, sometimes as much as 5 days a week. He thoroughly enjoyed teasing and playing with his grandchildren. It was common knowledge that each grandchild was required to respond with, “Thank you Papa, you’re great!” anytime he gave them something. Most of the time it was something sweet. Steve enjoyed being with his family and friends and always made everyone laugh. He was always the life of the party!
Steve is survived by his wife Carol; his son Derek, grandson Preston, and granddaughter Raegan. His son Chad and wife Kristen, grandsons, Brock, Brody, and Bron. Bonus Mom Judy Burnside; brother Bill McAfee and wife Ronda, sister Tammy Campbell and husband Ross, and sister Sam McAfee as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Steve is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
The Celebration of Life will take place at 10:00 am on Saturday (June 20, 2020) at 24141 East State Highway 110, Calhan, CO with Pastor John Pauls officiating. In lieu of flowers please donate to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital at stjude.org.
