Susan was born on May 20, 1964, in Omaha, Nebraska to Duane and Marilyn Hyland. In 1965, the Hyland family relocated to Colorado Springs. Susan attended Jackson Elementary, West Junior High, and Coronado High School. She graduated from Coronado in 1982.
Susan attended Colorado College and graduated in 1986. After her first two children started school, Susan began a 33-year career at Colorado College. At her passing, Susan was an Academic Finance Analyst in the Office of the Dean of Faculty. Her coworkers remember her strong work ethic, genuine kindness, laughter, generosity, and friendship.
Susan’s greatest love was spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed her garden, her plants, crocheting, sewing, crafting projects, and collecting elephants. If you timed it right, you got to sample her delicious holiday baking!
She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 38 years, Matt, and her children Nathan (Lilly), Tyler (Dana), and Leah. She was Nana to four beloved grandchildren: Kinlee, Caden, Thea, and Evie. She is also survived by her father, Duane; brothers Tim, Tom (Sherry), and David (Kristi); sisters Cathy, and Karen (John); aunts and uncle Shirley (Bill), Diana, Norma; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at 10am in Shove Memorial Chapel, 1010 N. Nevada Ave, on the Colorado College Campus. A reception will follow the service. Susan’s favorite color was green, if you wish to wear something in her honor.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Susan’s name to the Aiken Audubon Society or the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.
