Virginia R. Helsel (Ginni), 82, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2021, at Memorial Central Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was born in Dodge City, Kansas, the second of three children born to the late L.E. (Jack) and Irene Paulin.
Ginni grew up in Ford, Kansas. She graduated from Ford High School in 1956. After graduating she attended nursing school at the Wesley Hospital, Wichita, KS. In her third year of training, she met the man who would become her husband of 61 years, George R. Helsel, who proceeded her in death on August 18, 2020.
Ginni and George married December 3, 1961. As a devoted wife of George, a U.S. Army officer, she moved with him to many locations across the United States and to Germany. During those years, she enjoyed attending social events, fundraising for good causes, supporting the development and interests of their children, and traveling with her family. In 1981 she completed her degree to become a registered nurse at George Mason University and in her career provided excellent care to the elderly in nursing homes and precious patients through hospice care. Her care of others was a passion in her life. Ginni was also a founding member of the Tri-Lakes Methodist Church in Monument, Colorado.
She is survived by her brother, Ira Paulin and wife Marcia; her loving children, son Craig Helsel and wife Dawn; daughters Deana Davies and husband Merve, and Sue Samuelson and husband Eric. Ginni is also survived by her wonderful grandchildren Thomas Davies and wife Helen; Monica Davies and one precious great-granddaughter Auria See-Davies. She also leaves many loving nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be held at Ford Cemetery in Ford, Kansas on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held at a future date in Colorado Springs. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ginni’s name to the Tri-Lakes United Methodist Church or the American Red Cross.
