Bill was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 8, 1939 to Charles Virgil and Traba Fawn McQuary. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia, where he met his love, Louise. He married Mary Louise DuBose on November 16, 1963. Together they had three children and nine grandchildren. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
After graduating from college Bill was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. In his career choice he followed the footsteps of his father, who graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. His daughter Wendy continued that military tradition by serving as a doctor in the U.S. Navy. He furthered his education by earning a Masters Degree in Forensic Science at George Washington University. Bill served his country in the Air Force for 28 years, working as a Special Agent in its Office of Special Investigations. That service took him across America and from South Korea to Wiesbaden, West Germany, where his first two children spent their formative years and his youngest daughter was born.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Charles Robert McQuary. He is survived by his wife Louise and his sister Judy Jones. Bill also leaves behind his son Jeffrey, and his daughters Wendy and Skye, and nine grandchildren: Laura Cerny, Ryan Cerny, Evelyn O’Shaughnessy, Camden O’Shaughnessy, Juliet O’Shaughnessy, Lachlan O’Shaughnessy, Cosette O’Shaughnessy, Aurora O’Shaughnessy, and Tobin O’Shaughnessy.
Bill McQuary was a rock and an anchor. He was a solid rock upon which a happy family was built. The world changed mightily since he started his family in 1963. But his wife and children knew peace and stability in the life that he made possible for them. Bill was also an anchor. He imbued his children with his own unfailing belief in in honesty, loyalty, hard work, and self-reliance. He embodied the Scottish aversion to hypocrisy. His legacy to us is his values, and the example he set by living them. May we never come unmoored from them.
