Carol Jean Hemminger, who went by the name of Jeannie with her family and friends, was born April 16, 1941 at St. Bernardine’s Hospital in San Bernardino, CA to Carl S. LaRosse and Veronica (Leeds) LaRosse. She had two sisters, both of whom preceded her in death, as well as her parents.
In 1956 Carol married Robert Hemminger. They had no children and were divorced in 1962. She never married again, but remained close to the Hemminger family.
In June of 1969 Carol completed her education and received her High School diploma from the Belmont Community Adult School of the LAUSD. From that point on she seemed to continue to take classes of one kind or another. A business machines certificate in 1968, an accounting certificate in 1976, medical Terminology and Anatomy III certificate in 1976, Spanish I and II in 1986, Word Perfect in 1994. As a very interesting note in 1994 she completed a Master of Private Investigation through the Nick Harris Detective Academy. She then went on to complete courses in Microsoft Word and Excel in 1995. In 1999 she earned an AA Degree in Liberal Arts from the Los Angeles City College and was on the Dean’s list each year she attended. In 2000 she completed a class in Business Statistics.
Carol once owned a carpet store and a bar in Los Angeles. Once she completed her degree she worked as an office assistant in various companies. She then moved back to San Bernardino County in 2005 and her last job was for the County of San Bernardino, SCSEP until February of 2013.
Carol traveled often to Mexico and after her Alzheimer’s progressed and she couldn’t even remember words in English, if someone said something in Spanish she could answer them. The last year she especially loved going to eat in Mexican restaurants and listening to the music.
Once Carol realized she was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s she asked for help from her friend Sharon Humphrey and her daughter Sarah Castro. In March of 2022 they took over her care completely. In July of 2022, after breaking her hip in a fall, Carol moved to a care facility where she was well cared for by the staff at Upland MGB Carmel Manor until the day she passed away. Carol was transported to San Antonio Regional Hospital in Upland on July 1, 2026 where shortly after arriving she passed away. She was 85 years old.
Carol had no immediate family but she had, Sharon Humphrey, Sarah Castro, Michael Humphrey, Josh Castro, Abigail Humphrey, Isaiah Castro, Maielle Castro, Chris Tolleson, Linda Thompson and Jennifer Thompson, as well as her caregivers at Upland MGB Carmel Manor and many staff members at Innovage who loved and cared for her until the end.
