1926-2018
Dorothy (92) of Loma Linda, California passed away on October 13, 2018. She recently resided at Mission Commons in Redlands, California.
She was born October 6, 1926 in Rush Springs, Oklahoma. Dot was four months old and her sister, Jewell was three years old when their mother died. The sisters grew up together on a farm near Marlow, Oklahoma. They remained close throughout their lives.
Dot married Everett (Gene) Thornton in California on February 14, 1948. Gene was in the Navy during World War II and stationed in California. The war was over; Gene received his Honorable Discharge and returned to Oklahoma. Gene was attending Cameron College in Lawton, Oklahoma. During this time, Dot graduated from Bray High School and was attending Hill's Business College in Oklahoma City. Through friends they met and with time both decided that love, marriage and California was their destiny. California was the beginning of their new life.
They had three children: Jeanne Thornton of Loma Linda, Gail Thornton of Las Vegas, Nevada and Bruce Thornton (wife, Maria) of El Dorado Hills, California. They had three grandchildren; Jared Blocker (wife, Celine) of Naples, Florida; Zachary Thornton of El Dorado Hills and Christy Thornton of El Dorado Hills. They had one great grandson, Jaxson Blocker. Jared is the son of Jared and Celine.
Her husband, Gene in 2004 and her beloved sister, Jewell (Fullerton) Lewis in 2011 preceded in Dot in death.
Dot and Gene were members of the Grand View Baptist Church of Grand Terrace. Dot was employed with the Pacific Telephone Company for many years; she retired from the Jerry I. Pettis Memorial Veteran's Hospital in Loma Linda in 1990. She and Gene were very active in the Bloomington Little League and she was a past president of the Bloomington Woman's Club. She was a former member of the Eastern Stars of Colton and Gene was a past Worshipful Master of the Colton Ashlar Masonic Lodge #306 in 1983 and 1987. Gene was in construction, a member of the Carpenter's Local #944 in San Bernardino and received his fifty-year service pin.
Dot and Gene were always involved in Church functions, Union activities, Social/Community events and especially family. Dot was an avid gardener and her yard was without a weed, always green and filled with colorful flowers.
Dot will be lovingly missed, but her spirit will live in the hearts of family and friends. We will remember her with a green thumb, laughter and love.
