And each time, the young woman would tell her mother that was where she wanted to be buried because it looked so peaceful.
Now, Alma Fajardo's friends and loved ones are trying to make her wish come true.
The Yucaipa resident and 2008 Redlands High School graduate died June 14 at the age of 21.
Fajardo had received a heart transplant at 18 months old. After recently celebrating 20 years with her donor heart, she suffered a fatal heart attack.
The general consensus among friends, neighbors and others was that she was a sweet and caring girl who would help her mother, a housekeeper, clean homes.
"If you knew Alma, your life would be touched forever," said friend Andrea Haikey. "She lived her life like how I wish I would live mine. She was so grateful for everything."
Fajardo, who was taking courses at Crafton Hills College at the time of her death, was involved in the school's chapter of Mecha, a student organization that promotes Chicano history, culture and education, and she took an interest in early childhood education.
"(Alma) was a joy to have in class," said English professor Ryan Bartlett. "She had a quiet courage about her....She never complained about anything. She just looked at every moment of her life and tried to live to the best of her ability."
