Josephine Shirley Duarte

Jo Duarte, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully in her home on November 17, 2025 at the age of 86. She was born Josephine Shirley Yorba to George and Dora on February 2, 1939 in Los Angeles, California. She had six sisters and one brother who she enjoyed playing with and caring for. Jo later moved to San Bernardino and grew up on Valley St. She attended Pacific High School where she enjoyed taking part in cheerleading, pom poms and choir. She earned many achievements including the honor of writing the school’s alma mater, which is still used today.

Singing became a great love in Jo’s life and she later became a professional singer. During this time she met and married Robert Bunch and had two daughters; Sherry and Lisa. While raising her children, Jo worked as a debt collector for a jewelry store in San Bernardino. She truly enjoyed her profession and was always proud of her career. In her spare time, she would compete in dance competitions for which she won many awards.

Years later Jo married her second husband of forty years, Lawrence Duarte and gained three step-daughters; Sandy, Cindy and Laura. Together they created a blended family that included fourteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Jo’s caring for her family knew no bounds and she even chose to raise one of her grandchildren, Heather.

Along with Larry, Jo enjoyed traveling to Mexico, camping in Dana Point with family and always attending their grandchildren's various sports games and performances. Jo also enjoyed serving on her church’s Alter Guild. Her love for the Lord was apparent to all who knew her. Jo was known for her impeccable interior design, beautiful garden, and hospitality. She had a special way of making all those who entered her home feel welcome and comfortable. Jo was the most amazing cook and everyone wanted to have dinner at her house. She had a selfless heart and lived her life in service of her family. Jo was fiercely loving and nurturing to those she loved. She will be greatly missed.
