Maria Julia Ruvalcaba was born on July 29, 1939 in the little town of Sauz de los Marquez, Jalisco Mexico where she spent all of her childhood. She was the youngest child of Aurelio Ruvalcaba and Maria Guadalupe Mejia. Julia, as she preferred to be called, grew up alongside her siblings Reyes Castaneda, Antonio Castaneda, Alberto Ruvalcaba and Agustine Ruvalcaba, who is still with us. Growing up, she would frequent a waterfall to do laundry with her mother. Her mother would often spoil her and buy her dresses. In her youth, Julia enjoyed going to dances and loved dancing to music by Pedro Infante and Antonio Aguilar.
On March 27, 1960, in the town of Santa Maria de Los Angeles, Julia married Fidel Luna whom she had known since her childhood growing up in the same small town. Fidel would often profess his love for Julia telling anyone who was willing to listen “You don’t know how much I love this woman”. After they were married, Julia and Fidel relocated to Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. It was here where Julia mastered her amazing cooking skills having worked at a local restaurant. Soon after their first year of marriage, Julia and Fidel were expecting the birth of her first born, Virginia Luna, and relocated to Torrance, California. After Virginia was born, the small family then relocated to Los Feliz, California in 1962. It was during this time that Juan Manuel and Fidel Arturo, Martha Patricia Luna, Miguel Angel Luna, and David Luna were born in nearby Glendale, California. After a few relocations, Julia and Fidel settled in Colton, California where they have lived since 1988.
Julia loved spending time with her family. Christmas Eve was a special time in her home, where her children and grandchildren looked forward to making tamales with her. Her caring nature toward her grandchildren, selfless love for her children and husband, hospitality towards friends and guests are just some of the attributes that describe Julia. Anyone who knew Julia, knew that she enjoyed visiting the casinos. You could find small handheld electronic casino games to entertain guests in her home. Julia was also the driving force of the family for being a Dodgers fan which was passed on to her children and eventually grandchildren. On a family trip to Florida for spring training, she got to meet her favorite Dodger, Tommy Lasorda.
Later in life, Julia was diagnosed and beat breast cancer like the fighter that she is. It is that spirit that lives in her children, and grandchildren and inspires those that were lucky enough to know her.
Julia is survived by her husband Fidel Luna, 6 children, 18 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and a brother.
