

Carolyn Kay Pence Custer, a pillar of strength and resilience, peacefully passed away
on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, in Yucaipa, CA, surrounded by her loving family. She
was 83 years old. Born in Sedalia, Missouri, Kay was a shining example of
determination and perseverance from a young age, exemplified by her achievement as
the valedictorian of her high school class. Kay exemplified extraordinary strength
throughout her life, a quality that filled her family with immense pride.
In 1970, Kay embarked on a new chapter in California with her beloved husband Jim
and their two cherished children, Rhea Ann and Rick. Despite facing the challenges of
Multiple Sclerosis for over six decades, Kay's unwavering spirit never wavered. She
faced adversity with courage, inspiring all who knew her with her resilience and
determination. Kay's greatest source of pride and joy was her family. She found
immense fulfillment in the accomplishments of her children, and her heart overflowed
with love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her legacy of strength, love,
and perseverance will forever endure in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
In 2003 she married Colonel Robert Custer. They were married for 23 years and
enjoyed retirement.
Kay was predeceased by her parents Bud and Rhea Hogan, brother, Steve
Hogan, husbands, Jim Pence, Robert Custer.
Survived by her brother Patrick Hogan and Christopher Hogan of Overland Park
KS, daughter Rhea Ann Caldwell, son in law Willie E Caldwell of Yucaipa, Son,
Rick Pence daughter in law Vida Pence of Redlands Six Grandchildren, Teresa
Juarez, Richard Pence, Stefanie Ankenman, Heather Gruner, Kristina Butze, and
Jennifer Thorpe. Sixteen Great Grandchildren.
As Kay rests in peace, she leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond her
remarkable courage & resilience. Her memory will continue to inspire and uplift those
who were fortunate enough to know her.
Funeral services are being managed by Montecito Memorial Mortuary. A catholic
mass will be held on Tuesday April 16 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church,
Redlands.
