Kelly Alan King

September 15, 1963August 29, 2013

Dr. Kelly Alan King Born on September 15,1963 in Los Angeles, California to Dr. Alan King and Bonnie Smith King, Kelly was the second child after his sister Karen King and followed by his sister Kerry King. After five years on the east coast, the King family returned to California and settled in the Redlands/ Loma Linda area when Dr. Alan King began working in ObGyn at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Kelly attended Redlands Junior Academy and graduated from Loma Linda Academy in 1982. Kelly attended Pacific Union College, then turned to Loma Linda University for a masters in microbiology before continuing on to medical school at Loma Linda University. In 1997, he finished his training in ObGyn, following in his father's footsteps. Kelly began his medical career at Kaiser Permanente where he worked for the next 16 years. He was a respected physician and delivered countless babies. In 1996, Kelly married Madeleine Barkhuizen and they made their home in Redlands. Their son Dakota was born in 1999 and followed by daughter Katie born in 2001.

Even as a small child, Kelly showed exceptional athletic ability. He was an avid skier since age 5 and loved the family’s frequent trips to Mammoth Mountain. Kelly was also a serious sportsman. He hunted big game in Africa and took annual hunting vacations with his friends. Kelly enjoyed travelling with his family to the beach, Yosemite, Florida, and all the national parks. Kelly especially loved being a father. He seemed happiest when helping with nightly homework, taking Katie to soccer and volleyball practice, watching movies, taking them skiing, or hunting with Dakota. Dad’s dinners were becoming quite a hit as Kelly developed an interest in cooking.

Kelly was blessed with many close, lifelong friendships. He cherished those relationships, and kept close through their frequent adventures such as hunting in North Dakota, helicopter skiing in Colorado, canoeing in Canada, fishing in Laredo, and countless minor shenanigans.

In addition to his wife and children, Kelly is survived by his mother Bonnie Smith King and sisters Karen King and Kerry King. Kelly is deeply mourned by his family and many many friends, colleagues, and patients.

I think of my friend and co worker everyday. I cry tears of sadness that we have loss such a great man too soon. We worked side by side for years. We saw one another through very hard times. He helped guide me in raising my son and my life decisions. I feel lost without knowing he is here with us but comforted knowing he's looking after me from above.

My Sincere Condolences to the entire family of Dr King. I just heard about his passing and was deeply saddened. He was an Amazing Doctor and always had the perfect, gentle words to say. I had the honor to meet Dr King in 2007. He was my beam of hope when I came into labor & delivery 7 weeks before my due date with my first baby. I had a pre-ruptured Amniotic sac so he hospitalized me for 2 weeks and oversaw me my entire stay until my son was born. Each day he made his rounds to come in and check on me and my status. He made me feel at ease and confident ALL would be ok with my baby. I THANK him and know my son is here today Healthy and Well and Thriving while under his professional care and his choice to induce my labor pre-maturely. He always spoke with love and joy about his wife and children. I also had the chance to see him for a few visits during my second pregnancy as well. He was just the Best OB/GYN around! He will be Truly missed and I will be forever Grateful to him and honored to have known him. He touched many lives no doubt. God Bless him and your family. May he rest in peace forever in His Glory. He will Always be remembered!

Kelly (Dr King) and I were classmates and friends at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Although we had not stayed in contact after we and our classmates went our separate ways to complete our respective residencies, I have fond memories of times together with Kelly and friends. It truly was one of the best times in my life.
Kelly was a pleasant, soft spoken, intelligent, and good humored/good natured human being.
My hope and prayer is that he had a redeeming relationship with our savior, Jesus, for then we will be once again together in heaven.

I am so sorry to hear this news. I had just referred a good friend, who just found out she's pregnant, to see Dr. King. She told me the news after she called Kaiser to make her first appointment. He was my OB/GYN for both of my sons and he delivered my second son.

Dr. King was so kind and talked about his family almost every time I saw him at the Kaiser Redlands clinic. I never felt rushed during any of my appointments and always knew he was really listening to my questions and concerns. When he delivered my second child it was the most calm delivery because of how easy going he is. He made my husband and I laugh between each of my contractions.

My deepest condolences to the King family. He will be missed.
