It is with sadness, yet with joy and gratitude for the life of a faithful priest, that I inform you of the death of Rev. Louis Nicholas Marx. Fr. Marx was called to his eternal rest early Friday morning, April 13, 2018, as he quietly prayed in the sanctuary of San Secondo d'Asti Church. He had been in declining health for some time, hospitalized on many occasions, yet still regaining sufficient energy to continue priestly service. He is survived by his only sibling, Anna Palfreyman, who lives in Texas, and her family. May he now rest in the eternal embrace of our Good Shepherd, whom he followed so closely.
Louis Marx was born to Nicholas Marx and Elizabeth Steilin Marx on July 1 1, 1940, in Evanston, Illinois. He was baptized in St. Jerome Church, Chicago. Moving to California, Louis attended elementary school (1945-1952) in Needles, Barstow and Hinkley. He also attended Barstow Union High School (1952-1958). Answering a call to priesthood, Louis attended St. Francis Minor Seminary, San Diego (1958-1960) and Immaculate Heart Seminary, San Diego (1960-1966). He was ordained for the Diocese of San Diego on May 19, 1966, in St. Joseph Cathedral, San Diego by the Most Reverend Francis J. Furey, Bishop of the Diocese of San Diego.
The first priestly assignment for Fr. Marx was assistant at St. Rita Parish, San Diego (1966-1968). Thereafter, he served at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, St. Rose of Lima Parish, and Holy Spirit Parish, San Diego, then at Sacred Heart Parish, Coronado, and St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Rialto. With the establishment of the Diocese of San Bernardino in 1978, Fr. Marx was incardinated into the new diocese, serving as pastor of St. Anthony Parish, San Jacinto (1979-1985); Vicar Forane for the Hemet Vicariate (1981-1985); and pastor of St. Francis de Sales Parish, Riverside (1985-1997), after which he was appointed pastor of San Secondo d'Asti Parish, Guasti, the parish community he has so lovingly and devotedly served, until he was called Home to the Pastor Bonus.
