Nicholas DeMartz blessed us with his loving presence until April 23, 2026, when he passed away after a brief illness. He was born in April 1946 in Hazelton, Pennsylvania to George and Carolina DeMartz and raised in Junedale, PA along with his siblings, Celia, Mary, Michael and George. He joined the US Air Force days after his high school graduation, and as a loyal patriot he served two tours in Vietnam. He used his GI bill to earn a Business Administration degree from Cal State San Bernardino. Nick married Margaret Gutierrez, and they were married for 58 years, the parents of three children, Nicholas, Carolyn and Matthew. In 2011, he retired after 21 years as Deputy Director of Business Services for the San Bernardino County Economic Development Agency.
Nick was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was truly an exceptional person, deeply devoted and committed to his family. There are not enough words to describe his great character. He was loyal, faithful, intelligent, charismatic, generous and loving. In retirement, he was heavily involved in the daily lives of his children and grandchildren. For years he coached baseball and soccer, enjoyed fishing, cooking and visiting casinos, and always supported the kids in their various interests in theatre productions, sports and the arts.
He is survived by his wife Margie, adult children Nick, Carolyn and Matt, grandchildren Matthew, Bella, Taygen, Michael, Brett, Lucas, Taylor and Justina, and great grandchildren Alice and Zelyah, as well as countless nieces and nephews on both coasts.
We are deeply grateful for the love, support and prayers we have received. Memorial services honoring Nick will be held at Montecito Memorial Park on May 21, 2026 at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to the San Bernardino City Mission or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
