Pat was born in Alberta, Canada, and adopted by Paul Eyer and Joy Davis Haldeman at nine months. The family lived in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia until she was 12, at which time they returned to her father's native Southern California. While attending Pacific Union College, she became friends with Glenn Engevik, a fellow student. Pat transferred to the College of Medical Evangelists, now known as Loma Linda University, to finish her BSN. Following Glenn's return from the Korean War, they married on February 16, 1958. Five years later, they adopted their daughter Carrie, in November 1963. Many years of hard work, family times, business success, and travel later, Glenn passed away unexpectedly on October 10, 2006. This was devastating for Pat, but she soldiered on, relying on her deep faith, and family and friends to help in her walk toward healing.
Pat was introduced to Tom Dickinson by family friend Catherine Titus, in Spring 2007. Pat and Tom quickly became inseparable, and they married in May 2008. Good years of travel, enjoying the Newport Beach area, and various adventures blessed Pat and Tom for several years. Dementia attacked Pat over a decade ago, growing incrementally worse. Pat and Tom remained in the Newport Beach home she had shared with Glenn until her dementia necessitated a move to Linda Valley Villa in Loma Linda, a senior apartment community with services provided and care available, in April 2019.
Pat and Tom shared their Villa apartment, and quieter adventures, until she fell and broke her hip in early November 2022. Although the replacement surgery was successful, she was just too frail and too affected by dementia to recover enough to return to their home. Tom found a wonderful care home walking distance from the Villa, where Pat lived her remaining 10 months. He was able to visit her daily, which was a blessing to them both.
Pat won her victory over dementia and ill health on Sunday, September 24, 2023. She is survived by her second husband, Tom Dickinson, daughter Carrie Engevik, Tom's 4 children, 10 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild, multiple family members from her first marriage, and birth family members in the US and Canada.
Pat's memorial service will be held on Monday, October 16, at 10:00a at Montecito Mortuary's Cypress Chapel, 24145 Barton Road, Loma Linda, CA 92354. Her committal service will immediately follow at 11:30a at Montecito Memorial Park, 3520 E. Washington St, Colton, CA 92324. Pat's niece, Karen Harris, will host a luncheon in Pat's honor at her home, following the services.
