In behalf of the family of Alfredo and Aniceta Anguluan of Cagayan, I'd like to express our deep condolences for Manung Hido's passing.  I am grateful for the chance of having seen him for the last time during Jojo Anguluan's funeral.  My memories of him when I was a growing child will always echo with the joy and exuberance of his being!  Papa and Mama, with me tagging along, always had fun visiting him and Manang Lilian in Manila.  Mama even had their narra dining  table to keep when Manung Hido and Manang Lilian had to leave for the US.  It is an heirloom furniture piece which Mama bequeathed to me, and which in turn I have bequeathed to my only daughter, who now uses it in her dining room!  That narra table is our solid reminder of a man who was in so many ways, a model of stability and strength to his own family, to his community, and to us, his extended and happy Tuao family!  Manung Hido, your laughter and smiling face will always grace our hearts! We are happy that you are finally in the comfort and peace of our Divine Source. Fly me to the moon, Let me play among the stars, Let me see what spring is like on 

     This will always be one of the songs that I will remember Dad with. I must be about 5 years old. My dad and I  were outside of our house in Cubao one evening and the moon was almost full.  Cubao, then, was a very quiet part of the city. The sky was clear and Dad pointed up to the captivating moon.  He spoke casually that we will go to the moon!  He was smiling when he said that and I believed him! This promise was made four years even before man actually conquered the lunar space. That was Dad !  He believed in the possibility of things scientific.  Even in Manila, he had engaged himself with other engineers to discover an alternative energy for vehicles to run.  Even when we joined them here in California, I would catch him updating himself with the recent researches on this topic.

     When Dad was born to my grandparents, Manuel and Elisea Blado, their relatives and friends already claimed that Dad will have a life better than most people because he was born with a  small 11th finger by his left thumb. With that 11th finger and God's blessings, Dad did fulfill their expectations. He then passed on the honor to us, his children and grandchildren. Thank you Dad for giving me a good life and, with mom, for enrolling me in the best schools.  In those institutions of learning, I became stronger not only academically, but, spiritually as well. In those nurturing campuses, I met my best friends who also helped mold my character.

     To me, Dad has always been a strong and healthy person.  He was in constant research on how to keep himself in tiptop shape.   I felt that Dad was still stronger than I was six years ago.  After his stroke, we were in denial of his paralysis. We were all waiting for Dad to miraculously recover.   It was painful for us to experience Dad dependent and mostly silent.  Yet, even in his silence, he was still able to make us jump with laughter !!! For instance, he would  point at the ice cream or the soft drink that we were having and then signal to us to say,  Hey you, I want that, too! We did have our jovial moments!

     Aside from learning the Filipino and English languages, I  may have missed the rest of the language gene from Dad. Dad was a natural language learner.  We have a lot of dialects in the Philippines and when his company would send him to their various manufacturing sites he would immediately make friends. He could easily gladden the people he was meeting when he  would  converse in their dialect.  Mangan tera  Dad ! That means, let's eat!

     This gift with languages was a blessing to his family during the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines in the second world war years. A young teen, he befriended the enemies and learned  to speak the Japanese language.  Conversing in Japanese,  Dad was able to convince the enemy soldiers to stop physically torturing his father and so, my grandfather's life was spared. As far as I can recall, Daddy gets so alive when watching his favorite games on TV!  His love for boxing and always watching the boxer Pacquiao fight to win allowed us to communicate with him in his silent days.  When we want Dad to close his fist, we would simply cheer, Pacquiao, Dad, Pacquiao ! and Dad was ready to close his fist and have his blood drawn.

     Dad had kilig moments with us. When we were in the Philippines, Dad was always happy during sweldo days. These were the 15th and 30th of each month. He was always filled with excitement to see our wide grins over a  Max's fried chicken or  a Barrio Fiesta Crispy pata that he bought for our dinner. Come every September, I always knew that it was my birthday because I would wake up to the loud 45 record playing Happy Birthday to You ! non-stop until I got out of bed ! Once I was out of my bed and in the living room, Dad would be there with his laughing eyes!

     My dear Dad, many, many years ago, that one evening in Cubao,  I forgot to ask you when we will go to the moon. I believe you went ahead of us to prepare things for all of us. I know Dad that now, at this very moment, you are watching us and

You have filled your heart with song
You are singing forever more
God is all you long for, all you worship and adore
In other words, you love God so truly! In other words    

I miss you  Dad.  Till we fly together.

        Long before I met him in person,I had already heard his name mentioned with fond admiration by his second-grade teacher, my mother. PORFIRIO BLADO was one of the smallest boys in my class but he was certainly, among the brightest, she would say. Hearing a teacher fondly remember a former pupil that way struck a chord in my young mind. When I go to school, I will try my best so that my teachers will remember me as a bright girl, too, I vowed to myself. And I did. Thank you, Manong Piring for blazing that trail  for me. 
        Time went by. I moved from our small rustic town of Tuao to the urban environs of Tuguegarao and then to the metropolis of Greater Manila.  It was in the big city that I had the opportunity to now meet ENGR. PROFIRIO BLADO in person. He was an executive at San Miguel Corporation, one of the country's biggest business conglomerates. The position he occupied was definitely bigger than his small frame would conjure in people's minds. But his bosses were not deceived. That diminutive engineer was as hard-working and innovative and intelligent as any company could get and San Miguel Corporation acknowledged that. My mother's description of the little bright pupil she had long ago fit my impression of him on our first meeting.
      Manong Piring,it has always been an honor for me to be welcomed into your friendship and into your family. Thank you for making me so proud to be your townsman and relative. 
      In 2003, when I first arrived in America, you were one of those who reached out to me with great moral support. You encouraged me to stick it out here so I can give my own family better opportunities. You shared me your experiences and thoughts and prayers. Talking to you had often lifted my homesickness and immigration discouragements. Thank you for the kind concern you have shown. 
      You have been such a good Manong. I miss talking to you and hearing your voice swell with pride over the achievements of Lirio and Claudine, Boy and his family, Melissa, Daniel , and Joem. I miss the guffaws Manang Lilian and I shared at your expense. But you were such a good sport; you laughed loud with us. You may be silent now, Manong Piring, but I will still hear your jolly, encouraging voice in my heart. Be at peace; we love you; the Good Lord loves you more.

It hurts to say goodbye Manong but death is inevitable and beyond our control as mortal beings. When I learned that you passed away, I felt the pain of losing a brother like you. Manong, I consider you one of the best brothers in this whole wide world. Opportunity and greener pastures brought us away from each other. But no regrets, because you found your good life in a foreign land, a chance given to only a few. 

Memories of the past always linger in my heart. You are a brother hard to forget. We will treasure all the good memories we have had when we were still young and together as siblings of Ina and Ama. It is still very vivid in my mind and heart the year 2009, when you visited us. My heart was overwhelmed when you stayed with us at home. You have left an unforgettable get-together with our family. I know Manong that you love us because spending for a very expensive air fare to travel is a big deal but perhaps to your thinking money was not a hindrance for you to be able to see us, your loved ones. Our relatives know for a fact that we have close family ties and this is what we treasure as a family. Your stay with us last 2009 will long be remembered. 

You are now rested Manong. You are now in peace with our Creator. You have joined God in a blissful state and please Manong extend our embraces to all the deceased members of our family. May you now rest in peace.

 

Dad is the primary father figure in my life, after marrying into the Blado family.  I myself grew up without a father.  My mother raised 8 daughters on her own.  I had no sense of what a father figure is like in a family unit.  I did not know what having a father meant and I did not experience what a father is in a family. No happy Father's Day experience growing up. 

Dad Perry is the one person in this world I called Dad.  I have been blessed to have someone I can call a Dad for the past 27.5 years now.  It meant a great deal to me when Manny's Dad welcomed me with no hesitation and with open arms into the Blado family.    He was even so gracious in extending his father role to my family when he walked one of my youngest sisters down the aisle on her wedding day.  

I was always mesmerized as I witnessed Dad's relationship with his son, Manny (my husband), and even more at how he related with his grandchildren, particularly my sons.  I know then why Manny is such a good father to my own sons.  Daniel and Joem are quite fortunate to have such exemplary father figures in their lives. I am confident then that  Daniel and Joem will be amazing fathers and grandfathers too, if our Lord will bless them with children and grandchildren of their own in the future.

Dad was such a joy when he came to visit.  He constantly  tried to find something to improve around the house, my kitchen knives were so sharp after he visits, he would label everything he worked on & was so organized with his documentation, all he did for our sake.  He encouraged his grandchildren to either watch while he worked around the house / garden or give them the hands-on experience right then and there.
 
Dad and Mom planted 10 (!!!), not one or two, but 10 calamansi trees on our property.  They are taller than our basketball court, over 2 stories high!  We are blessed to have such abundant fruit-bearing trees. I will always remember him as I harvest calamansi. 

I am also so grateful for Dad's inspiration for higher education to his children (taking Manny where he is today in his career and here in this great nation) and to his grandchildren (contributing to where they will go in their career).  His role in their educational aspirations made some things easier for me as their mother.

Dad Perry was the only active / present grandfather in my children's lives, and now he is gone. He was their number one cheerleader.  He spoke so highly of them, his eyes twinkling. I know he will be watching over them, and will be beaming proudly in every accomplishment of his grandchildren, big or small.  His grandchildren are so blessed to have someone like their grandpa in heaven watching and praying over them.

Melissa Elevado Blado (Richmond, Texas)

I have known my father all my life. Perry and Lilian have always been a part of my life as a graduate student, as a married father and as a professional. Growing up, my Dad was my EXAMPLE and INSPIRATION. From him I learned the value of hard work, discipline and single-mindedness in one's pursuit. His stories about surmounting the obstacles he experienced as a young man from a rural town dreaming to go to college were always in my mind as I faced difficulties in my studies and career. Dad's accounts about the hardships he had to face as a working college student, pushed me to discipline myself and give up less important things to reach my goals. His inspiring narratives were my source of strength and resilience. Dad was my counselor and encourager. In our evening walks when I was growing up, I would pour out to him my fears and disappointments which he calmy help me resolve and allay. With encouraging words he redirected me to instead, utilize my strengths and look forward to the challenges with the determination to prevail over them. Dad was my advocate and supporter. He openly praised my achievements (sometimes to my embarrassment). His appreciation of my efforts drove me more to make him proud. I remember looking forward to giving him the good news about my academic work. All the effort and hardwork are crowned by his enthusiastic approval. Dad was also a generous father and a good provider. He made sure we had the resources we needed. Dad was the type of father who would rather give me and my sister the better car to drive when we were students in U.P. while he, an executive at San Miguel Corporation, used our old family car. When my wife Melissa and I started our life together here in the U.S., he generously offered his time to fix furniture, equipment, electrical problems, plumbing in the apartments we lived in and in the house we now own. Dad would rather fix my car problems instead of letting me bring the car to a shop and spend my money on it. Dad was a grandfather well-loved by my children. They appreciate very much his advice and counsel, his jokes and most especially his praises and compliments. Thank you Dad, for being a father to me and my sister Lirio , a husband to our mother Lilian, and a grandfather to Claudine, Daniel and Joem. Thank you for providing a role model for us to emulate. Thank you for the beautiful memories of our times together as a family. Thank you for your hard work, your determination to have a better life, for because of you and Mommy, we are here in this great nation enjoying the opportunities which other people can only dream of. How I wish you were in front of me to hear these words in person. I should have written you more letters telling you how proud I am to be a Blado, how much I appreciate all the things you have done for our family. I should have told you more often how much I love you. My dearest dad I will miss your visits to our home, your genius in fixing things around the house, your timely and wise advice, your inspiring stories, your beaming smile and laughter, your kind words of  praise and pride in our achievements. Rest now, my dear father. Now it is time for the Lord to enjoy your company. I quote John 14: 1-4: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where I am going you know the way." We look forward to seeing you at the awesome mansion/dwelling place that the Lord has prepared for you. We ask for your prayers as we prepare ourselves here to be with you and our Lord forever. WE LOVE YOU VERY, VERY MUCH!

Manuel Gardo Blado (Richmond, Texas)

When I was younger, I remember being amazed at how strong he was  even at his old age. I also remember being upset when he allowed me to beat him in an arm wrestling match. We never had a rematch so I guess I'll never have the satisfaction of actually beating him, but it would have been nice to have beaten the strong old man that he was.  My grandpa was also the first person I had ever known to take care of his diet. This was one of the earliest influences in my life that pushed me to pursue a healthy lifestyle. I always admired his dedication to eating healthily. However, the one thing I most admired about him was that he was the one who changed our family's life for the better. He was the man who decided to get an education and pursue a life for our family that far exceeded his socio-economic upbringing. It is thanks to my grandpa's hard work and dedication that I have had and continue to have amazing opportunities and blessings in my life. Honestly though, I am glad for my grandpa. He truly has lived a full life with a wonderful family and an amazing career. I trust that the Lord is taking care of him and that soon he shall enter into the gates of heaven. For God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that all who believe in him may not perish, but may have eternal life (John 3:16). I continually pray for his soul and look forward to the day that I  hopefully  can see him in the amazing presence of our heavenly Father.

Joem Blado (Houston, Texas)

Growing up, I saw Lolo Piring as a stern and rigid person.  Sure, he definitely had a sense of humor: when I was in kindergarten, I remember how ecstatic I was when I bragged to everyone around how rich I became after Lolo gave me a one million dollar bill, only to be confused by his lighthearted laughter shortly after (to my disappointment, the bill was fake).  But to me, more often than not, Lolo Piring was a serious, deliberate, and proud individual, a man who let his actions speak louder than his words.

And for good reason, too.  He was the first of my family to receive a college education, hailing from a small rural town in the Philippines. I was always amazed to hear stories of how my grandfather would motivate himself to become an engineer, despite bearing some household pressure to remain a rice farmer.  As such, I believe that he has instilled in my father, and from the two of them to me, a strong sense of value for higher education. He was ambitious, determined, and smart, paving the way for his children and grandchildren to experience many opportunities that he himself did not have growing up. If it were not for him, I may not been able to grow up in the United States, a legacy that I am always grateful to Lolo Piring for. Experiencing the fruits of his hard work and success first hand, I too have since been striving for academic success in the applied sciences, and I partially credit my career goals to Lolo Piring himself.

Of course, I could tell that Lolo really and truly cared about his family in earnest.  Even when visiting us on vacation, he would always find ways to help around the house, whether it be a furniture mend, electronic repair, or auto maintenance  I was amazed at how this hardworking engineer would proactively find and fix problems often unaware to us. Back in Houston, every time we park the car, there is a little bouncy ball hanging from a thread that serves as a marker of sorts; placing the ball on the center of my windshield ensures that the car is parked perfectly, without obstruction and away from hitting anything.  It's these small creative acts of kindness that regularly remind me of Lolo Piring every time I return to Houston.    

In 2009, Lolo Piring visited me during my first semester of college at Caltech, and he told me something I'll always remember. He said to me, you know what, Daniel, I never cry. Never. But I just may cry from happiness at your graduation. It totally caught me off guard, and I looked forward to that moment ever since. When my graduation came, I didn't quite get the water works I was hoping for, but Lolo was basically grinning from ear to ear the entire time he was there. For someone whose demeanor is so often reserved, seeing him so outwardly happy really touched my heart.

You have been such an inspiration and source of joy in my life, Lolo Piring.  I will miss your odd-job inventions, spontaneous life-advice talks, and the memorable occasions that you would crack a smile in front of me.  Feel free to smile all you want now, Lolo. You said you would cry for me then, and I cry for you now  but just as you said, these are tears of joy. We love you and do miss you, but we also know you are in a better place, smiling and laughing with the Lord. So long, and till we meet again.

Manong Piring had lived a full life in the here and now: loving, active, involved, productive, committed, human. He must already be reaping his harvest in the hereafter: eternal bliss and happiness in Divine company. Loved ones, take comfort!

Lolo Perry/Pering was a great example of someone who worked hard for his accomplishments and someone who never gave up on his  dreams. From being the first engineer of his town to going up the ranks of multiple companies in Manila, to starting his career up again in the U.S., he was an inspiration to his family and to everyone who has known him. 
I was blessed to have been able to spend a good amount of time with my grandparents, as I lived with them during highschool. When my Mom was unable to drop me off or pick me up from school, he was there to do so. He patiently waited for me to finish up with tennis, waterpolo or swim practice and sometime he would even drop me off for morning practice! When I was younger, I always looked forward to times when Lolo would invite Lola and I to go the mallhe was so patient in waiting outside of Forever 21, doing his crosswords as I finished shopping. He even helped me pick my prom dress! My most unforgettable memory of Lolo is when we took a welding class together the summer after my freshman year of college. He was like a kid on Christmas morning, while we were picking out our welding supplies. I remember being very nervous that first week of class since I was the only girl in the class and most of the students were at least a decade older than me. Lolo was my rockhe made sure that I wouldn't be intimidated and told me that I am as good as anyone in the class. He took the time to teach me the skills I needed. These experiences highlight how much Lolo has been an important part of my formative years and an important part of my life. He was always so reliable and steady. He was there when I needed him and I can never thank him enough for that.  
Lolo, I love you very much and I will miss you a lot. I'm comforted that now you're no longer in pain and that you're with God now.
